Officials anticipate Thornburgh support By SHARON FINK & Daily Collegian Staff Writer Director of Commonwealth Relations Frank Forni said although Gov. Dick Thornburgh has not been in office long enough to determine how effective a governor he will be, his campaign statements indicate he will be a strong supporter of higher education. “We have no history on which to base our expectations (of the Thorn (V burgh administration), but as of this time the University anticipates a good working relationship with the administration,” Forni said. ‘‘Thornburgh indicated in his cam paign that he thoroughly supports higher education and we thoroughly r expect him to do that. ’ ’ Forni also said the University has strong representation in the General Assembly in re-elected Sen. J. Doyle Corman, R-34th, and newly elected j. Rep. Gregg Cunningham, R-Centre. “The University has always had a good working relationship with Sen. Corman,” he said, “and he has demonstrated his support for us in the past. We are quite confident he will j " continue to support us as he has. What can you say about an administration that’s only three weeks old? What kind of an opinion can I have of an administration that has no track record?” On Corman, he said, “If I say anything politically pro, the Democrats will say I’m anti- Democratic, and if I say anything bad, the same goes for the Republicans. Henry Jackson yesterday predicted long lines at gasoline pumps and $1 a gallon prices within a year as a result of the upheavals in oil-rich Iran. Jackson, D-Wash., head of the Senate Energy Committee, said he does not anticipate coupon-type rationing unless oil supplies from Saudi Arabia falter, but “in this irrational area of the world (the Mideast), we have to allow for the fact that this could occur.” Jackson said he expects Iranian oil sales to the United States and the West in general to be stopped for at least the rest of this year if Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini establishes control of the government. While Iran supplies only some 5 percent of America’s oil imports, it provides other western nations much more and a stoppage affects the entire world oil market. Jackson told interviewers on CBS’ “Face the Nation” program that Carter must tell the American people the im pending energy shortage will mean hardships and changing lifestyles. “There isn’t any question that we will have to shortly undertake a program of allocation,” he said. “I think the president should tell it like it is.” DON’T GET RIPPED OFF! I think the American people need to be told these things.” On other topics, Jackson said: China is “out to bloody the Viet namese nose,” in retaliation for Hanoi’s attack on Cambodia and there is danger of a Soviet counter-attack on China’s northern border. Jackson said Peking has cleared out a border town, ap parently in anticipation of such a move. Carter should be “a little more restrained” than he was in a weekend interview when he raised the possibility of American forces going to bat for Taiwan at if Peking attacked.
