The discussion, attended by about 35 students and faculty members, focused on the national history of Women’s Studies programs and the proposal’s progress “through the maze of approvals that will be necessary if such a program is to exist here at Penn State,” according to a committee statement. The-proposal would establish a 21-credit interdisciplinary non-major option within the College of the Liberal Arts. The program could be combined with any major. The option’s classes would be drawn initially from existing University courses with a major focus on women, as well as supportive courses on related topics. In 1973, an introductory women’s study course, Liberal Arts 200, was offered, initiated by sociology professor Eloise Snyder and several consultants. Since then, courses related to women have been developed in the English, journalism, psychology and speech communication departments. Snyder said she “discerned the makings of a program” in the development of these and other University courses related to women. Some said we were three years too late, others three years too early,” Snyder said of the early efforts to get a program started. -* - Snyder drafted an option proposal which was discussed and revised with students and faculty interested in women’s studies. The revised proposal is now before the CurricuL' k Affairs Committee of the College of the Liberal Arts. If approved there, it will go before other faculty and ad ministrative committees during a lengthy review process. Snyder said the committees have a "right and duty to critically review” the proposal, and that organizers “have the right and duty to respond.” The proposal’s backers intend to monitor the review process, and make public modifications and objections to the plan, Snyder said. History professor Isabel Knight said that if the proposal reaches the Faculty Senate level by June, the option could be a reality by Fall Term. French Professor Chrstiane Makward said that as of 1977, there were 176 college women’s programs nationwide, about half of which had structured programs leading to a degree or certificate. Of these, 60 offered bachelor’s degrees, 16 master’s degrees, and two Ph.d.’s in women’s studies. ' f FURNISHED EFFICIENCY APARTMENT includes heat and cable price negotiable.
