    For movies, come to 'Cabaret'
By DIANA YOUNKEN
Daily Collegian Staff Writer
"What good is sitting alone, in your
room? Come hear the music play ."-. .
Life is a Cabaret, old chum . . . Come to
the Cabaret." Were the subtle promise
of this beckoning song as simple as it is
charming, movies would be a useless
art.
It's a joyous refuge, or at least has the
rumblings of one, but the world unlocked
' by Elsie with whom the singer "shared
jour sordid rooms in Chelsea" is as
,sinister as it appears safe and as
4 paralyzed as it feels free.
• With Christmas over and a new year to
contemplate, we could all use a
"Cabaret." The 1972 film, directed and
choreographed by Bob Fosse, is quite
'simply a marvelous musical an un
' sentimental, all-absorbing story set in
'Nazi Germany. The star is simply Liza
, Minnelli as Sally Bowles, a self
'destructive singer in a decadently
delightful Berlin bar. Michael York
plays her bisexual boyfriend with
touching elegance. The film won eight
,Academy Awards, including best ac
!tress for Minnelli, supporting actor for
7 Joel Grey, best director and musical
: score. At 7 and 9:15 tonight and Sunday,
,112 Kern. '
~, Also on campus:
"The International Animation
,Festival" includes award-winning short
-films from France, England, Belgium,
the United States, Yugoslavia and
Czechoslovakia that are far superior to
the Saturday morning TV fare. At 7 and 9
tomorrow and Monday night in 112 Kern.
"High Anxiety," directed by and
starring Mel Brooks, is too slow and
cumbersome at times, but it has some
- great parodies of Hitchcock's "The
'Birds" and "Psycho." The cast includes
Madeline Kahn, Claris Leachman and
Harvey Korman and is every bit as
-hilarious as one would expect. At 7:15, 9
and 10:45 tonight and tomorrow night,
' 7:15 and 9 p.m. Sunday in 121 Sparks.
)
"Bambi" and "The Texas Chainsaw
Massacre" make an odd double bill -
-sort of ' like "Snow White" opposite
"Dirty Harry," to get serious about this.
