"The agency has terminated the planning for this mission because of the limited potential for success," NASA said. That means the 77.5-ton assembly, the largest man-made object in orbit, will re-enter Earth's atmosphere sometime between mid-1979 and mid-1980, scattering an estimated 25 tons of debris along a 3,000-mile-long belt 50 to 100 miles wide. The space agency noted that 75 percent of Skylab's flight path is over water, and said the chance of any debris causing injury or property damage is less than that from meteorites. The agency said Skylab, last manned in 1974, "will be con tinually monitored while contigency plans for reentry are assessed." The National Aeronautics and Space Ad ministration scheduled a news conference today to discuss the situation and the contingency plans. NASA said a combination of factors made it clear that continued efforts to save Skylab were impractical, and noted the total estimated cost would have been more than $6O million. Skylab, 118 feet long, was launched in 1973, at which-time there were no plans to try to keep it from re-entering Earth's atmosphere. • However, NASA decided early this year to try to have two FOR SALE SUGAR BOWL TICKETS MOLLY'S IRISH PUB 732 Toulouse St. New Orleans, L.A. 504-523-8016 unfurnished 'ING THESIS/GENERAL TYPING Nine years experience. Mark 865-5037, Pat 865-7006 SUZIE MERRY, MERRY Christmas You're the person who makes seasons Joyous all year round' Swashbuckler SUE HERE'S TO a great first Christmas and a Happy 19th Love Donnie and Mane's Kid space shuttle astronauts dock a remote-controlled rocket unit to Skylab to either push it into a higher, longer-lasting orbit or to send it on a controlled dive toward an empty ocean. Recent sunspot activity has increased the density of the very thin upper fringes of atmosphere at Skylab's altitude, now 2f miles. This increased the atmospheric drag on the structure, thus slowly reducing its altitude. A series of maneuvers in the spring and early summer reduced that drag, but NASA said deterioration of the ship's systems, along with reduced electric power and control jet gas made it unlikely that stabilization could be maintained long enough. 'eAtt In addition, the second flight of the shuttle has been delayed and NASA said the rocket unit that was to be used to move Skylab probably would not be ready for flight until April 1980. The initial idea was that Skylab could be pushed into a higher orbit where it would remain until astronauts could., return to it in the 1980 s, possibly using it as a nucleus for a space platform or as a warehouse in orbit. But John Yardley, NASA associate administrator for space transportation, said in a recent interview that there was little likelihood Skylab could be saved. He said then the administration was re-evaluating the who( Skylab probject to see if it was worth spending the tens a millions of dollars required when the odds were slim that Skylab could be reached.
