—The Daily Collegian Friday, Oct. 20, 1978 Dancers to star tonight By JOYCE GANNON Daily Collegian Staff Writer With the appearance of the Martha Graham Dance Com pany at the University this weekend, audiences will have physical proof that grueling workouts are not reserved for huge, muscular football heroes. Dance is probably the art form of the decade and in the past several years, its popularity has risen to a commercial point because of the success of films, books and magazines dedicated to the subject. But no matter what kind of glorious institution it has become in the media, dance remains an art to be mastered only by those dedicated to perfection and not reluctant to feel a little sweat and pain in the process. When a dance is performed well, the participants seem to flow through the choreography in a daze and often seem like spirits. You can tell when something is wrong because timing is thrown off and the result is a weighty imbalance, with grace and freedom forsaken. And the hours spent in ace bandages are just as many for the true dancer as for the bulky halfback. Martha Graham’s company of dancers will pertorm three times this weekend: tonight (which is sold out by subscription) and tomorrow at 8:30 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. Hers is a troupe regarded by critics as the best in the dance world. Graham, who began working in the 1920’5, is often called the “pioneer of modern dance.” Graham will not. accompany the dancers this weekend but the company’s programs will reflect the innovations she has made since classical ballet reigned as the only accepted danceform.
