Walker Building to be honored By JIM WILHELM Daily Collegian Staff Writer The Eric A. Walker Building is among five Centre Region structures that will receive awards for community ap pearance at a special luncheon today. The awards are being presented by the Centre Regional Consciousness Group, which for the past seven years has honored property owners in the region who have greatly improved the ap pearance of their property. An awards luncheon will be held at noon in the Hotel State College. The Walker Building will be honored for “its tremendous improvement to the community,” Carl Johnson, chairman of the consciousness group, said. “Before the construction of the Walker Building, that site was a service yard for vehicles like mail and service trucks,” Johnson said. “There was a high brick wall with big gates and nothing else at the west end of campus. It was like having a backyard at our front door.” Johnson, head of facilities, planning and.development for the University, said the “functional and beautiful park landscaping" was the big factor in the group’s decision to honor the Walker Building. Two N. Atherton Street motels will receive awards. The Stevens Motel, 1275 N. Atherton St., owned by, George and Joan Sheaffer, and the Hall’s Motel, 1040 N. Atherton St., will be recognized for second story additions and remodeling. Awards will also be presented to Artz Arco and Watkins Dari Treet, both of Pine Grove Mills. Artz Arco, owned by C.S. Myers Oil Co., will be honored for renovating the front of the service station while the Dari Treet constructed a new building. The Dari Treet formerly had nothing but “a grill and a screen door to take orders through,” Johnson said. “Now a kitchen area has been surrounded by an indoor waiting area with tables outside AND FOR A FRUITFUL EXPERIENCE- FRI.SAT, SUN 10 Sparks 7:30,9:00,10:30 $1.25 U The BEST In on*campus entertainment... a JEM production for USG The Daily Collegian Wednesday, Oct. 4,1978 for seating customers. It’s a very complete job with a pleasing design.” “There is no set number for how many awards we can give out,” Johnson said. “You take any house and give it a coat of paint and it’ll look better. Of course, you can’t give awards out to everyone, but we will take suggestions from people not in the group.” Other consciousness group members include Vice Chairman Joe Conway, Lynne Verity, Susan Dean, Robert Nuss, Robert Aitken and Joan Selby. Awards are presented to property owners in the Centre Region, which consists of College, Ferguson, Halfmoon, Harris and Patton Townships and the Borough of State College. Johnson said he was not sure who would accept the Walker Building’s award on behalf of the University. The building was completed in 1977 and dedicated in the name of former University President Eric A. Walker.
