U.S. gym team has no room for Simon Bv DARLENE HROBAK Daily Collegian Sports Writer ■ It’s too bad for Paul Simon that almost only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. The Nittany Lion gymnast went to Oklahoma City Sept. 21-23 with an eye on landing one of seven spots on the United States team which will compete in the World Gymnastics Championships. Simon came close, but ended up ninth in a field of 16. “I really wanted to make it badly,” the senior gymnast said. ‘‘lt was a disappointment because I was really aiming for that, but it was en couraging too. “Especially my optional total because I tried to make 55 all last year and I could never do it.” The optional day of competition, on which Simon scored his highest total ever of 55.2, wasn’t the problem. R was the first day and the com pulsories that severely weakened Simon’s chances. “On the first day, I broke on the SUPER SAVINGS SPECIAL WITH ONE FILLED SUPER SAVINGS BOOKLET GRADE A LARGE EGGS ONE DOZEN FREE Save your stamps m handy "Super Savings' booklets available at the check stands Each booklet holds 30 Golden Tens ANNIVERSARY „ BONELESS BOTTOM WHOLE 1510 20 lb. The next day was all uphill, but even Simon’s best career optional score wasn’t enough. He scored a total of 108.55 points over the two-day meet and the seventh and last qualifier compiled a score of 110.00. “If 1 would have hit that high bar routine, I would have been very, very close to the seventh position,” Simon said. “And that’s encouraging.” “My ring compulsory routine was a 9.25, my best ever. I was also really encouraged with my pommel horse routines on both days.” The favorites in the event, Indiana State’s Kurt Thomas and Oklahoma’s Bart Conner, came out on top with 115.55 points each.
