Graig Nettles, Roy White, Thurman Munson and Bucky Dent had three hits apiece as the Yankees went on an 18- single binge. Ed Figueroa and Rich Gossage combined on a five-hitter as the Yankees streaked to their sixth consecutive victory and their 16th in the last 18 games. With 20 games remaining, New York's defending World Champions and Boston have 86.56 records. Boston's gamble in starting rookie southpaw Bobby Sprowl failed quickly as the Yankees jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Figueroa, 16-9, allowed three runs and three hits, including Fred Lynn's 21st homer in the first six innings. Gossage, earning his 23rd save, was nicked for an unearned run in the seventh.
