Only two games have been played, so it's too early to tell just yet. But if Friday night's 3-2 victory over highly regarded Cleveland State is any indication, Lion fans may be in store for an unforgettable season. The Vikings, who were ranked No. 6 in the country at the end of last season, just couldn't keep up with Penn State's calm, controlled style of play. "Penn State looked very, very good and used the big field to their ad vantage," Cleveland State coach Steve Parker said. "I don't think there was any difference in play, but in composure. Our team just didn't look composed." The Lions, however, looked composed enough with only 4:07 gone in the first period. After a Jim Stamatis penalty kick, Duncan Mac Ewan assisted fellow midfielder Sal Bommarito on the first goal of the game and Penn State led 1-0. The score stood until the 11:42 mark when Cleveland State's potent front line combination of John Tyma and Bob Offense, defense go together for McDonald By CHUCK RUSS action is, where the goals are scored." • Daily Collegian Sports Writer McDonald did, however, get to go where the goals are Defensemen rarely have a opportunity to score goals scored when it counted Friday night: His goal against during a soccer season; •but in this, only the second Cleveland State gave the Lions a 2-1 advantage and a game of the '7B campaign, Penn State sweeperback Ken lead they never relinquished. The remainder of the period was played in the entire length of the field ex cept for the goal cages. At halftime, it was still tied up at one. "We played, I thought, very con sistently from start to finish," Penn State coach Walt Bahr said, "especially in marking players, not giving them space to play in." One Viking who didn't have nearly enough space to play in was Tyma. The Olympic team member, who led Cleveland State in goals last season, was shut off so effectively by defender Dave Lloyd that he ended the game without a single shot on goal. "I think everybody played better, but especially the back four," Bahr said. "Kevin Scott had an outstanding game, as did Dave Lloyd, Ken McDonald and Bill Klauberg." Just when it seemed as if all that out standing play might go for naught, Penn State broke through for a 12:08 second period goal by McDonald off Stamatis' corner kick. Cleveland State tried to play catch-up but all it' could muster was a tally by midfielder Emil Breuer that wasn't quite enough because time ran out before they could get the tying goal. But is Cleveland State a legitimate No. 6 ranked team this year? "I don't think our team is any worse than ,it was last year," Parker said. "Overall, we are weak in a few critical areas, but I think we have a much, much more balanced team in depth." Or is it just that Penn State is that good enough to beat a nationally-ranked team? • • "It's hard to say," Stamatis said. "If we work hard and play well, we can be really good." Teammate Herb Menhardt wasn't quite so careful in his choice of words. The 6-1 game captain lines up at the near post, while the 6-3 Jancevski stands near the far post. This corner play also led to midfielder Sal Bommarito's first goal of the year. Still, it is the senior co-captain that makes the play work. His presence in the Penn State lineup itself is a surprise. He had not practiced until two days before the Lock Haven game because of a hematoma of his calf muscle. ShdliSec il
