Another loss ends ;softballers season ,The Penn State softball team closed out its frustrating season yesterday, with an 11-5 loss at Ursinus, giving them a 4-9 record for the season. It was errors that led to the Lady Lions’ defeat, as they com mitted six miscues during the game. Three of them were throwing errors by third baseman Jan Carlson, who'has been bothered by an arm injury. “The fielding errors were costly,” said coach Pat Mc- Tarsney. “They were the type of errors we haven’t normally ' made during the season.” The Lady Lions jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Jan Scinto singled to start off the inning and Sue Legutko reached base on an error. A passed ball by Ur sinus starting pitcher Janet Mascia allowed Scinto to score and a sacrifice fly by Janice Presel scored Legutko. . Penn State scored two more runs in the fourth. Diane Dixon walked to start the inning and Carlson followed with a single. A wild pitch advanced the runners, who scored on sacrifice flies by Gail Schumaker and Cathy Cronin. A sixth inning homer by Schumaker ended the scoring for the Lady Lions. Ursinus has scored three in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead. A six-run fourth inning, highlighted.by three Penn State errors, put the game out of the Lady Lions’ reach. The big blow in the fourth was a two-run triple by Kim Thorne. The Lady Lions were afrle'to get only five hits off Mascia, a slow-ball pitcher who caught Penn State off its guard. "Once we got behind, the hitters started getting anxious and didn’t waitlong enough for the pitch,” McTarsney said. Presel went the distance for the Lady Lions, giving up nine hits and one walk, while striking out two. In addition to allowing the Lady Lions five hits, Mascia walked five and struck out one. Scinto, with two of the Lady Lions’ hits, earned the special praise of McTarsney. “Scinto played an excellent game, especially in the field,” McTarsney said.
