Faculty Senate backs By JIM McGUIGAN Collegian Staff Writer The Faculty Senate yesterday en dorsed the adoption of the Continuing' Education Unit (CEU) as a uniform measure of non-credit instruction. The CEU is 10 contract hours of par ticipation in an organized continuing educational experience. The contract hour'is a typical fifty-minute classroom instruction session. CEU’s are intended to measure only non-credit courses. ~ The Senate Committee on Continuing Education recommended the adoption of the CEU because it reduces confusion and fragmentation that exists dmong the many individualized recording systems in existence. It also provides ajjase for establishing data that can be compared with other institutions. The CEU also assists individuals in validating their non-credit instruction so they can use the information with their employers, professional associations and other agencies. It provides the elements for a record system useful ih, Prisoner escapes A prison inmate from the Rockview Correctional Institution, out on a work detail, forced a guard at gunpoint to drive • him to Bellefonte last night. According to state police, Alan Albertis'Ammell, 31, of Cernegie, escaped at 6 p.m. armed with a .38 caliber revolver and extra am educational planning by institutions and adult students. The Senate accepted a report per taining to faculty organizations at the University. A survey of awards and scholarships was also accepted. After lengthy debate the Senate postponed action on a recommendation by the Committee on Faculty Affairs that would require the evaluation of the teaching effectiveness of faculty members.' The recommendation would be based on more than the student’s evaluation of classroom performance. The committee also suggested ten possible procedures to complement student questionnaires. Some of the suggestions included oral interviews of students and a follow-up of the student’s more advanced work to evaluate the effectiveness of teaching in the lower division or introductory courses. The Senate also postponed action on a report from the Committee to Review Procedures of Academic Units for munition. The report contains recommendations for changes in University transfer and retention policies and procedures. - A report on the use of part-time faculty was accepted by the Senate. The report, prepared by the Committee on Intra- University Relations, recommends the appropriate committees of the Senate investigate the use of part-time faculty. The report states part-time faculty usage has approached 30 per cent of all resident instruction at some of the Commonwealth campuses ; at others it is • almost non-existent. The original version of the report, submitted to'the Senate before it was amended yesterday, called for a maximum of 15 per cent, of all resident instruction sections to be taught by part time faculty at all campuses.
