Freshman Nancy Deal and teammate Sue Ward sandwich the opposition in pre-season ac tion as coach Gillian Rattray watches intently. Road opener for stickwomen Barb Stephan and Sharon Puffey return aaft mainstays on the defense. Along with. sophomore Joni Mannarino, they will fill the fullback positions. Sophomores Jody Field and Jo Shelly will play at midfield, and coach Rattray will take advantage of a new rule allowing substitutions, and have fresh;, man Sue Hahn and sophomore Jane Haythornthwaite share the left field job. J With just five of last year’s starters returning, a lot of questions are being asked about Penn State’s field hockey team. Today should provide some answers, as the Lady Lions begin their dual meet season at Millersville. They go into the game with a strong forward line, but the defensive unit is unproven. Three of last season’s veterans Chris Larson, Sue Ward, and Charlene Morett were expected to play on the foward line, along with Becca Garwood, an Ursinus trans fer in her first season of field hockey at Penn State. Morett, however, was injured -in a scrimage Sept. 19, and is still out of action with a bruised right ankle. This could be a blow to the team, since Morett was leading scorer last season. She will be replaced by Nancy Deal, a freshman who put on a good performance at the Mt. Pocono tournament earlier this month. LOST: GOLD St. Christopher's medal at I.M. fields. Sen timental value.
