Junior linebacker Kurt Allerman looks at his hands in bewilderment after dropping interception. Pack needs snap to tame the Lions By KEVIN BACKSTROM Collegian Sports Writer The past week a downtown bank has been distributing "Smack the Pack" buttons to its patrons. Tomorrow North Carolina State (6-3) will enter the Lions' lair and the Pack's Head Coach, Lou Holtz wonders if his team can handle Penn' State's "smack". "Anytime you play a team the caliber of Penn State your only chance for su.. - vival is to play an outstanding defensive ga:ne," says Holtz "If we don't play one of the best defensive games we have played this year we have no hope for survival." "We could even be embarrassed," em phasizes the coach. Unfortunately for Holtz, the defense he is depending on so heavily is severely hobbled. Three of the Pack's defensive starters are nursing injuries, including their defensive key, middle guard Tom Higgins. "Defensively, at the present time, we're pretty well banged up," explains Holtz. "Tom Higgins has a bruised knee and a pinched nerve and has been playing at less than 100 per cent in practice . , AO he's really playing with a great deal of pain and has been doing so for the last couple of weeks." Higgins, a 232-pound senior, scored eight tackles and five assists last Saturday against the South Carolina Gamecocks. The middle guard also earned the national Lineman of the Week award earlier in the season after N C. State upset the Florida Gators 8-7. "Eddie Poole (a corner back) has a pulled hamstring and is listed as doubtful at the present time," continues Holtz reviewing his list of wounded. "Although, I do think he will be less than 100 per cent in the event he does play." Also questionable for tomorrow's tilt at Beaver Stadium is defensive tackle Tom Prongay. Prongay is hampered by a knee injury. Offensively, the Wolfpack is sparked by freshman speedster Ted Brown. Brown who was restricted to the kick-off and punt return teams in his first four collegiate games was inserted into the N.C. State starting lineup shortly before the Pack's fifth game and has responded by becoming the team's leading ground gainer with 698 yards on 98 attempts. The freshman has also become one of the nation's leading scorers. Brown has scored 64 points on ten touchdowns and two two-point conversions. Two weeks ago, against Clemson, the 180- pound halfback carried the football 24 times and totaled 227 yards. And last week against Charges TORONTO (AP) Dan Maloney of the National Hockey League's Detroit Red Wings was charged , with assault yesterday following his Wednesday night fight on the ice with Brian Glennie bf the Toronto Maple Leafs. Frank Callaghan, deputy attorney-general of Ontario, said Maloney was to appear in court here Dec. 4 on the charge of assault occasioning bodily harm. The NHL said it planned no action against. Maloney. Callaghan said Maloney had not been served with a warrant because he was out of Ontario's jurisdiction. The Red Wings were in Montreal, where they play the Canadiens tomorrow night. The team does not return to Toronto until Jan. 3. Callaghan's action came after Atty. Gen. Roy McMurtry had called for an the Gamecocks, the rookie tallied 164 yards. Reserve quarterback Johnny Evans is the Pack's second leading rusher.with 346 yards on 93 attempts. Evans is followed by fullback' Rickey Adams. Adams has carried the pigskin 69 times and has collected 331 yards. Directing the Wolfpack's double-veer of fense, on attack that has averaged 361.2 yards per game, is senior quarterback Dave Buckey. A four year regular, the six-foot signal caller has connectected on 85 of 156 aerials, 'accumulating 1,149 yards and five touchdowns. He has had five passes in tercepted. The quarterback's favorite target is his twin brother Don, a split end. The wide receiver has hauled in 22 throws covering 369 yards. Flanker Elijiah Marshall is the Pack's second leading pass catcher with 15 catches and 262 yards. He has caught one scoring toss. Tight end Pat Hovance follows Marshall with ten receptions and 120 yards. He too has caught one touchdown pass. On the Penn State side of the ledger, Joe Paterno says his Lions are playing the best defense since Mike Reid and Company menaced the opposition back in 1969. "Penn State is ranked number eight in America," says Holtz. "They are certainly deserving of the ranking." '"They are an exceptionally fine defensive team," he continues. "They are a very sound offensive team, and an excellent kicking team." The Nittany Lions' defense is anchored by linebacker Greg Buttle and halfback Tom Odell. Buttle leads the defense with 95 tacklet and has three pass interceptions. Odell, (5-10, 178-pounds) the smallest player in the Lions' starting lineup ) has picked-off four enemy throws and has five fumble recoveries to his , credit. Woody Petchel is leading the Penn State ground corps. The senior tailback has tallied 518 yards on 122 carries for a 4.2 yards per carry average. Duane Taylor, who sat out the Maryland contest with an ankle sprain, is the Lions' second leading ground gainer. The junior fullback has collected 511 yards on 108 carries. Taylor is expected to be back in uniform and ready for action against N.C. State. Split end Dick Barvinchak has been quarterback John Andress' favorite target. The senior wide receiver has covered 295 on 15 receptions. Barvinchak is followed by flanker Tom Donovan. Donovan has haided in 12 passes for 130 yards. filed after fight investigation into the fight. Maloney was not im mediately available for comment, but Red Wings Coach Doug Barkley called the charge "ridiculous." Callaghan said he would not comment further on the matter because the case was before the courts. This marked the third time an NHL player had been charged by local authorities with a crime resulting from action on the ice. Dave Forbes of the Boston Bruins was charged with aggravated assault last Jan. 17, following a stick-swinging incident with Henry Boucha of the North Stars in Min nesota. The nine-day trial ended in a hung jury on July 18 and the charges were dropped Aug. 11. In 1970, the late Wayne Maki, then with St. Louis, and Ted Green, then with Boston, were acquitted of assault charges following their fight during an exhibition game Sept. 20, 1969, in - Ottawa. Green suffered a fractured skull that almost ended his career. Maki was not hurt in the fight. He died of a brain tumor four years later. In the second period of Wednesday night's game, won by Toronto 7-3, Glennie was attacked after he had hit Detroit's Brian Hextall with what appeared to be a clean check near the Toronto blue line. Maloney pounced on Glennie from behind, dropped him with a right hand punch, then hit him several more times and repeatedly lifted and dropped Glennie, causing him to strike the ice. Glennie had to be helped from the ice and was taken to a hospital for observation. WFLers can sign says Rozelle NEW YORK (AP) National Football League Commissioner Pete Rozelle officially cleared the way last night for clubs to sign former World Football League players for this season until Nov. 26. The NFL cleared one former WFL player, tackle Chris Morris of San Antonio, yesterday and said it would process requests as they come in from players for clearance. Rozelle said the two new franchises, Tampa and Seattle, could also sign WFL players for 1976 when those two teams will begin play in the NFL. "All 28 teams can sign WFL players for next year," the commissioner said. "As long as the two new teams are being permitted to sign them, we felt the players should have the right of choice of the Big Ten UNIVERSITY PARK The Daily Collegian Big 10 board of prognosticators met for the final time yesterday, and it ap pears that the writers, after trailing most of the way, will finish in the money. Kevin Backstrom goes into the final weekend of action two games in front of second man Gorden Blain. One game behind Blain is Dave Morris, followed by Jeff Young and the guests, both five games back. Brian Miller brings up the rear. Backstrom played•.it safe in all but one game, picking un derdog Navy over Miami. Blain also went with one upset, tabbing the Okie State Cowboys over Colorado. Surprisingly, everyone except Backstrom and Morris went with the Cowboys. This week's guest, Pat McLaughlin (10-HPA), went with several upsets, including Georgia Tech over Notre Dame, Baylor over Texas and Stanford over Southern Cal. Stanford over Southern Cal? "I like Stanford's band," she said. Morris joined McLaughlin in choosing Baylor and supported the Bob Prince firing by picking West Virginia over Pitt. Brian Miller, the low man on the board, made his picks then left in embarrassed silence, much to the pleasure of Blain. "He's always shooting off his mouth about the coming revolution and all that," Blain said. "Hell, he can't even pick football games." 'Foreign team' key to Lions success By GORDEN BLAIN Collegian Sports Writer Do you know who Alkey Hummel is? Alkey Hummel is a senior on the Penn State football team and he's one of coach Joe Paterno's back up quarterbacks. But you never get to see Hummel in action, and that's not because John Andress owns the position. You only get to see the results of what Hummel does. Hummel quarterbacks the Lions'"foreign team". And the foreign team might be as important as the offense and defense you read about every week at Penn State. • The foreign team is the "rest" of the 105 players Paterno has. Only 48 dress for away games and 60 dress for home games. The other 40 or 50 toil every week just as the first and second teams do. And they work just as hard and go through the same ordeal. They only don't get to taste the excitement on Saturday afternoon behind a face mask. "When you're a senior it's more or less a job. You figure everything's paid for so you try to give them a good look. You still have a piece of the game," Hummell says. "You have some fun sometimes, but that's about it." That's not "about it" for the first and second teams though. Says sophomore second team defensive tackle John Dunn who played on the foreign team his freshman year: "They play an important role. We wouldn't be able to beat anybody without them. Coach Paterno has said it's the best foreign team Penn State has ever had." The foreign team prepares the first team offense and defense for the upcoming opponent by running the opposition's plays, by even huddling like the opponent and wearing its numbers of the players the Lions will face on Saturday thus the name foreign team. The foreign team tests each group of Mather big factor in ruggers' success By THOMAS McNICHOL Collegian Sports Writer Chris Mather has had many nicknames since he has come to Penn State as an exchange student from England but one seems to , , describe his abilities on the rugby field most ef fectively. That name is simply "the foot." Chris' foot was an integral factor in the 8-1 record that Penn State's A team posted in their recently completed fall season. He consistently split the uprights with penalty kicks and conversions from every conceivable angle. Kicking is an essential facet of rugby and in Chris Mather Penn State has one of the best. Also as a visitor to this country from rugby -c razy England he can offer some interesting insights into the game both here and in England. "My father was in the rugby club and I used to go to the matches with him when I was six and seven," Chris said. "I started playing when I was 11." Chris played for his prep school and - secondary school teams and began to emerge as a pretty good player. He also had the benefit of some good instruction. "I received a lot of in- New franchises can bid too other 26 teams as well." Ftozelle said the NFL own ers had not been able to final ize a plan for stocking the two new clubs during Thursday's day-long meeting. "We've got the mechanics pretty well set, but not the numbers," the commissioner said. Originally NFL clubs had been barred from signing WFL players on the premise that a team could "buy a championship" by spending enough money late in the season to sign available talent. That plan was overturned Wednesday by a federal judge in Minnesota and Rozelle said he believed the 10 players who had taken the class action suit would be among the first cleared for signing by NFL teams. Rozelle said the procedure for signing WFL players views crystal ball for last time positions. Hummel, along with other foreign team quarterbacks John Carroll and Mark French, throws and runs against the linebackers, the defensive backs, and the defensive line in separate groups. The foreign team defense tests the first team offense. But the key work comes at the end of practice during a session called "thud." It's an eight to 12 play scrimmage with the foreign team testing the first and second teams. In "thud" everyone makes initial contact and then finishes the play. It's practice in reaction to the opposition's plays for the defense. The foreign team sees the play on a card before they run the play. "It's not hard to know what to do after looking at the cards," Hummel says. "Our defense is hell so you get a little bit of self satisfaction beating them. You have some pride: People get psyched up every so often to do a good job." "If you practice well you can help the team a lot," says sophomore fullback Tony Gordon. "Give them a good look at the other teams' plays. If the team is winning games I'm just as happy as if I was dressing." Gordon was a special back before the Ohio State game. He wore jersey number 45, Archie Griffin. He says the foreign team does have its advantages: "It kind of makes you a better athlete. Take last year, Rich Mauti was on the foreign team." Mauti was playing this year until an injury put him out. "Of course it's a little depressing," says fresh man quarterback Mark French. "But if it's helping the team out, if a defensive back intercepts a pass you know you were doing something right. You try to do what you can, just try your best. I'm not trying to get anybody. After all somebody has to do it." But what about doing it for four years? If the struction from my secondary school coach," Chris said. "I also benefited from the in struction of people like Mike Weston, who has played for the English national team, and Don Rutherford, who is now the coach of the English national team." Chris played for five dif ferent teams last year in cluding the University of Durham and his home club. He finds it quite different here but he enjoys it nonetheless. `-ltugby's a lot more relaxed here," Chris said. "Americans haven't learned to play dirty effectively yet. They haven't learned to play dirty and get away with it, a technique that most English players-have mastered." Chris also enjoys playing for Penn State and compares the team favorably with college teams in England. "The team has a per sonality. It's like a family and very friendly," Chris said. "The games here are like a social event. In England the social event starts after the game." Chris is optimistic about the future of rugby in America. "It's bound to catch op," he said. "People come to the games and it becomes like an infectious disease. Maybe it's would be to have the players request clearance through the NFL office. "Once we determine that a player is free, we notify everyone at the same time that he has cleared and is available to be signed. The players or their agents must request this clearance. We will ask for whatever documents we need." A National Basketball Association record crowd of 26,511 watched' Maravich and the New Orleans Jazz boost their season mark to 6-1 with a 113-110 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. The old NBA attendance mark was 20,234, set last April at a Cleveland Cavaliers-New York Knicks game in Cleveland. "When you think of all the great Laker teams, the great Knick teams, all those great Celtic teams and realize they never pulled 26,000, it really makes you stop and think what happened here," said Mel Counts, the Jazz' 12-year veteran center. "If this record is ever broken, it will be in one of two places: right here or on another planet where they do nothing but play basketball," said Maravich, the Jazz' flamboyant guard. Sports fans in New Orleans apparently will The Daily Collegian Friday. November 7. 1975- evidence would be acceptible to determine availability. "Certainly we'd consider a court order such as the one that Ken Stabler got last spring," the commissioner said. "Letters from a player's former club or the WFL office showing that a player is no longer bound because of clauses in his contract freeing him if his team or league player is a freshman or a sophomore, they can set goals and try to accomplish them, as John Dunn relates of his advancement to the second team from last year's foreign squad. But a junior or senior is near the end of the road. They haven't got the time and maybe not the desire anymore. "Hell yeah, there's periods of disappointment. But you learn to live with it after awhile," Hummel says. Hummel was a quarterback on the freshmen team but then he was' moved to split end for his sophomore and junior years. He played a few games in his sophomore year but that's been it. "They put me at split end, they said, so it would give me a better concept on how a pass defense and zone was," he says. "Then I hurt my back." "I never knew it until I came here that I have five to seven vertebrae in my bank fused together or something like that. I guess I-was born that way. It bothers me every so often." - It might be easy for the coaches to forget about the other players like Hummel, Carroll, and. Gordon but according to them they don't. "They're reasonable about that. The don't worry about us like they do those guys ( those playing the games)," Hummel says. "But they do talk to us, they're pretty good about that." "The coaches are looking at you, it's not just like they forget about us. They take care of us pretty good here," Gordon says. It's been a long four years for Alkey Hummel and his thoughts reflect what every bench sitter probably thinks. Thecommissioner said that in the cases where players signed with clauses other than those holding their NFL rights, the two teams in volved would have to work out compensation. "Hopefully, they'd do it right away so that it wouldn't come to me." Rozelle said that the member clubs were still dickering over the number of players they would protect in the expansion draft. Seattle will begin play in the National Football Conference West Division and Tampa in the American Football Conference West Division in 1976. The following season Seattle switches to the AFC Central Division and Tampa goes to the NFC Central. Both teams will be stocked next January before the Pro Bowl in New Orleans.
