Cigarette brands vary in tar, nicotine content WASHINGTON (AP) Maybe that big selling cigarette does taste as good as it should, but the government's latest tar and nicotine test indicate your health would stand a better chance if you switched to any one of a hundred different varieties with lower ratings. On the other hand, you could do a lot worse. There are dozens of types with far higher ratings According to figures released yesterday by the Federal Trade Commission, the harmful ingredients in cigarettes vary as much as 10-to 15-fold depending on the brand In laboratory tests run upon all 135 varieties of domestically available cigarettes, the commission rated regular size Carlton filters as the least dangerous with two milligrams of tar and .2 milligrams of nicotine per cigarette. King size Carlton filters and King Sanos were next in order. On the worst end of the scale were Players, highest in tar with :31 mg. per cigarette and English Ovals, worst in nicotine with 2.3 mg. The demonstration project that uses chest X-rays and thermography a heat detecting method as well as feeling for lumps in the breast has found 669 cancers. Of these, 79.6 per cent showed no evidence of spread to lymph nodes in the armpit. Other statistics for the United States show that cancer usually is detected at the state of cancer-free arm pit nodes in only about 45 per cent of new cases. Patients with negative nodes are known to have much better chances for long term survival and cure.
