Murcer returns to Shea NEW YORK (AP) It was perfectly logical that in his first trip back to New York's Shea Stadium, Bobby Alurcer should go lidless in his first game and then get rained on in the second. Murcer never did like Shea, and his'qirst visit in a San Francifro Giants uniform confirmed that bad things till happen to him there. "There's nothing like the wind there. I never liked to wear a batting glove on my top hand, but a lot of times I found myself wearing one anyway. I didn't feel the bat. It gets so cold that you spend a lot of time trying to heat your hands up. Sometimes you get to thinking about it so much, you forget to think about your hitting." On paper, there appears little-for the Flyers to fear in tonight's series opener. The five-year-old Buffalo club has never beaten Philadelphia here, and has not beaten the Flyers any place in the last 13 regular season and exhibition games. "But that's forgotten," said Flyers left wing Bill Barber. "It doesn't mean anything now." It means something to the Sabres, who moved into the finals by ousting the Montreal Canadiens in a six-game semi-final after taking the Chicago Blackhawks in a five-game quarter final. "The Flyers go right after you at the start," said Buffalo Coach Floyd Smith. "They forecheck, force mistakes and usually score early. And the way they check, it's hard to catch up.' That Was most evident Tuesday night, when the Flyers defeated The New York Islanders 4-1 in the seventh game of their semifinal series. They got a goal from right wing Gary Dornhoefer after just 19 seconds of play and center Rick MacLeish scored three times to toll midnight for the Cin derella third-year club from New York. Now there is a new goal for Philadelphia: stopping Gilbert Perreault, the awesome center of Buffalo's high-scoring "French Connection" line. "He's the only guy we've got to stop before he gets out of his end with the puck," said Flyers' defenseman Andre Dupont. "We've got to make sure he doesn't carry the puck—force him to pass. "Forecheck. That's all we've got to do. "If you hawk them all night, they're bound to panic. You have to go to the body—hit them every time they carry the puck or pass it. Even if you go out of the play, ;ake Perrault with you." That is easier said than done. Perrault is one of the game's most elusive forwards, and the burly Philadelphia defense must catch Perrault before they can hit him. Hitting will prevair in the early going, says Flyers' Coach Fred Shero. "I expect there'll be one really big fight, then the teams will settle down and play hockey." Shero said. "It's just something they have to get out of their systems." Foreign language Composti, Choruzy, Ledesman, Domazos, Christoforides, Hasan begovic. An introductory lesson in a foreign language? "We never know if they're going to start a brawl or play it straight." "We can't worry about the form the game is going to take," said Dupont. "Neither should they. We're just going to worry about our hockey team. If 20 guys work hard together, three guys won't beat us. - • The Blree Dupont spoke of are Buffalo's top line of Perrault,- with Rick Martin on left wing and Rene Robert on the right. The trio accounted for 291 points in the regular season. Martin had 52 goals, Robert 40 and Perrault 39. Of the 131-goal total, 17 were game-winners. "But I think our t system is good enough to beat anybody—when we play it right," Philadelphia goalie Bernie Parent said. "We'll have to be a little more careful about taking cheap penalties. "If we're going to win it quickly, we're going to have to, come up with at least one big game in Buffalo. They're very, tough in their rink." Still, the first two games in the best-of-seven series are at the Spectrum here, where Buffalo has never won. Thursday's opener will be followed by a national telecast of Game Two on Sunday afternoon before the series shifts to Buffalo for Games Three and Four. Box 444 Absecon, NJ 08201 The Daily Collegian Thursday, May 15, 1975- Behind The Bench Flyer fans show no class To the Editor Coming from New York City, I am naturally a Ranger and Islander fan. Although I highly respect the Flyers, their fans leave much to be desired. Since arriving here in the fall, I have been converted from a Flyer team hater to a Flyer fan hater Believe me, some of my best friends are Flyer fans: but it is amazing how a sports championship has gone to their heads' Instead of showing a little class (i.e. modesty and being open minded), many of ttiese so-called fans are unusually ob n-oxious and constantly complain about the Flyers' bad breaks. Secondly, it is a known fact that when the Boston Bruins were the bully-boys of the National Hockey League, their fans acted in a similar manner. In recent years, the Philadelphia contingent has replaced the Bruins on-both counts. Many of the Flyer fans think' they have to act tough, talk tough, and intimidate other team's rooters. Since I'm an extremely avid rooter, I've been the subject of much abuse from the Flyer fans. When the Flyers lead the Islanders 3-0 in their juo completed series, everybody was happy and gloating con stantly. However, all of a sudden it was tied at 3-3, and these fans became hostile. There were numerous threats of physical harm directed towards me, and I had to bring bodyguards to the T.V. room. Imagine if the Flyers had lost! After the final buzzer, there was a lull in the room, so I stood up and announced to the 75-plus fans, "Flyer fans have no class." One fan responded, "We migtit not have class, but we've got the Stanley Cup!" A roar of approval went up from the crowd. ATTENTION NEW CAR BUYERS Thinking about a new car? Sticker prices too high?
