He then quoted from Thomas Jefferson noting it was “all that needs to be said about the governor*, “ ‘He who permits himself to tell a lie [once finds it easier to do it a second and third time, 'til it becomes habitual.' ” The Senate^.voted 28-22 Wednesday not to confirm Denen berg to a PUC term that would have lasted until 1983. Denenberg had been serving an interim one-year term that started Jan. S) In his own press conference Wednesday, Shapp maintained ARHS to sponsor CHaplin comedy Charlie Chaplin's 1925 •■lassie film, "The Gold flush," will be shown at 8 p.m. Sunday in the University Auditorium by the Associated Residence Halls Association. The film contains two of Chaplin's greatest comic sequences: one in which he eats his shoe and one where he a skillful dance with two rolls. The PUC is a stinking, sewer of corruption. I’m delighted to walk put of the sewer into the fresh light of the day,” he said. , When Will Ketner, PUC secretary, objected to the statement, Denenberg said the charge did not refer to' the staff, which he described as competent and hard working. Pressed by newsmen to pinpoint the corruption, Denenberg said he wasn’t referring to the individual commissioners. “I think the process is corrupt .and bankrupt,” he said add ing that the PUC is wrong to make decisions without hearing from the consumer. •Denenberg claimed that his ouster was part of Shapp’s designs on national office. a He predicted that Shapp would break more commitments in his quest. / Denenberg said he was disappointed that Lt. Gov. Ernest Kline had joined the campaign against him by ruling a postponement motion out of order prior to the Senate vote Wednesday. Kline acts as Senate president. Replied Kline: “I have a constitutional duty to perform and 1 performed it.” The attack against Kline, Denenberg’s first, was not meant to signal the beginning of a campaign for the 1976 Democratic U.S. Senate nomination, Denenberg said. Both Kline and Denenberg are reportedly interested in the nomination, “I have said very clearly my tongue is not hanging out to run for the Senate,” Denenberg said. He cited his depleted finances and the expenses of running a campaign, but added, “I’m not ruling it out.” Denenberg was unsuccessful in his attempt to gain his parly’s nomination to run for the Senate last year, losing to Pittsburgh Mayor Peter Flaherty. Denenberg said his refusal to spare the sacred cows and adhere to the system contributed to his defeat in the state Senate.
