While law ,audents may studiously attend to their bar exams, many other students attend the bars studiously. Immortalized in countless country songs, the bar is an integral part of American society. For better or for worse, establishments serving alcoholic beverages serve a large part ,of the population and contribute a large share of tax money. According to the State Liquor Control Board, there are 29 establishments' in State College which hold liquor licenses, including 18 restaurants (the legal limit) and three distributors. These places, from the Arena to Zeno's, differ dramatically in atmosphere. Le Papillon, the restaurant-bar at Toftrees, has an elegant country club-like air, while thi Brewery atd the Phyrst are places to shoot the bull wit friends arid to party.i The Lion's ben has a reputation as a "Greek" bar while the My-O-My has an entirely different reputation, serving both the "gay" and "straight" com munities. Like every other business, bars are in Liquor prices 'high,' too The cost of getting high has been getting higher, at least when it comes to alcoholic beverages. State Stores have raised prices two or three times within the past year, according to the manager of the University Park Plaza, outlet. The last hike came about four weeks ago, with various items undergoing different degrees of inflation. "There has never been a general price change," he said, "but about 150 to 200 items are affected with each cost jump." State liquor prices are increased when the distillers raise prices, the manager said. The manager said that no individual brand of liquor can. be 'used as an example of inflation. He said the price of Seagram's Seven Whiskey, including four per cent sales and eight per cent relief taxes, was $4.74 ten years ago. Today the same amount costs only $5.73, including six per cent sales and 18 per cent relief taxes. Whilei the effects of inflation seemed to have passed over SeagraM's Seven, the manager said annual net profits from State Stores surpass those of the Pennsylvania lottery. Since all bars and restaurants purchase their alcoholic beverages, except beer, directly fpm the state, price hikes are often passed on to the consumer., The cost of several mixed drinks, especially those containing Scotches, increased about two months ago at the Holiday Inn, according to a bartender there. Many characteristics of the bars have not been included in this survey because they can't be boiled down to black-and white. Two of the most important aspects, the atmosphere and the state of min& of the imbiber, :re impossible to calculate. This survey can ( ply identify dif ferences in "quantity ," not "quality." Prices can be misleading because the drinks with lowest prices may include "bottom shelf" brands, while more expensive drinks usualli include higher quality liquor. Likewise, a tequila sunrise in ale bar may be very different from one in another bar. House measurement, or the amount of liquor in a mixed drink, varies from drink to drink and bartender to bar tender, butgenerally follows the figures specified. "Whatever. went up, went up wholesale," he said. "We hadn't had aprice raise for two-and-a-half years, but we raised prices to meet with the competition." The Nittany Lion Inn bartender said the prices of its "better drinks" have increased because costs of quality stock are higher. The woman bartender said Nittany Lion Inn drink prices have been 'raised within the last few weeks, while the prices of most liquor have gone during a three- or four-month period. She said the 10 to 25-cent hikes were an absolute necessity. The Scorpion's remodeling, on the other hand, was cited as the reason behind a 10-cent increase on some mixed drinks last week. However, the nightly bartender said prices went up last September. September was also the"month for liquor inflation at the Post House Tavern and the Tavern restaurant. A managerial em ployee of the Post House said beer prices increased by five cents then, but he said he does "expect a sliettiv higher cost raise on most alcoholic beverages there after .Tan. 1. • John Leedy, bartender at the Tavern, said their prices jumped upward during the second football weekend of this year. "Liquor really went up this summer," he lamented, "but we used to have the lowest prices in town." The Arena Restaurant,-an exception to the general rule, has not raised liquor prices since last May. The 10-cent increase on mixed drinks then was due to increased wholesale costs, ac cording to the bartender. Happy hours (or misery hours in the Shandygaff) vary from the weekly 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. of the Lion's Den and Brewery to the Friday, late afternoon of Harry's Downstairs and the - -Train Station. Restaurant-bar facilities like the Tavern and Le Papillon have no "happy hours." Generally speaking, happy hours feature draft beer a dime cheaper and certain mixed drinks from 25 cents to 50 cents cheaper. Some bars have daily specials, with one drink or more for 50 cents. Cover charges also vary from bar to bar. The Brewery, Harry's Downstairs, Scorpion,, Shandygaff and 'Village Inn Pizza usuallYk.harge at the door and have live , entertainment.
