Will Hawkeyes fly high after 44 years? By TIM PANACCIO Assistant Sport Editor Most people probably aren:t a 'are of this, but the Penn State-lowa series dates back--to 1930. The reason this fact might be overlooked is because the Lions and Hawkeyes have met on a regular basis since 1971. And Penn State plans to keep the rivalry going through the 1976 season. lowa's students like to win, too lowa over State Bucs roll for Ist-place tie NEW YORK (AP) —AI Oliver drove in five runs with a went to third on a hit and a grounder, and scored on a wild single and a pair of two-run homers and Willie Stargell added pitch a three-run blast, powering the Pittsburgh Pirates to an 11-5 victory over the New York Mets last night and into a first place tie with St. Louis in the National League East The Cardinals, idle yesterday, and the Pirates have iden tical 83-73 records and each team lit s six games remaining. Answer: In 1930 at lowa City, where they will be tonight. It was Burton Ingwerson who guided the Hawkeyes to their only shutout over the Lions, 19-0. Just for the record, Bob Higgins (who?) was head coach of the Nits that year. Enough nostaglia. Onward to the more recent and present. Joe Paterno will be seeing a new lowa boss tomorrow in Bob Commings, one of the nation's few coaches ever to make a jump from high school to college. Commings inherited a lot of headache from Frank Lauterbur who-was fired last season...just proir to lowa's final game of the year against Michigan State (15-6 loss ). Everyone including his titmouse knows that lowa upset UCLA 21-10 last week bouncing back from a 24-7 loss the previous week to Michigan. Commings probably has the best school in the Big Ten for upcoming potential. Still, the schedule is murderous with USC, Wisconsin, Ohio State and Michigan State in addition to the two games played thus far. Still, Commings has a positive attitude - about his Hawkeyes. "We're better off than I thought we'd be," he said. "We did a lot of attitude coaching in the spring and when drills ended this club was really together." " Four of lowa's top five•running backs returned this year led by halfback Jim Jensen. Rod Wellington and Mark Fetter are the others. Brandt Yocum and Bill Schultz are potent on the ends. The man who flies the Hawks is Rob Fick. Fick sat out 1972 and quit last year because of problems with Lauterbur He came back a third stringer and now he's a starter. He threw two touchdowns against UCLA last week. • ,According to the Pittsburgh operative, the third week of every season is "upset week" and the fourth week always is "form week," meaning go easy on those long shots. "If they've gotta get burned, they'd rather it was by a 'base than a home run. "So when Willie's hitting good, like he is now, I know they're not gonna walk me much because he's right behind me, waiting." Th6New York Mets would rather not have faced either of them last night. Oliver, with a 5-for-5 night at the plate, drove in five runs with a single and two home runs and Stargell knocked in four with a single and a three-run blast. The fireworks, highlighting a 14-hit assault, powered the Pirates to an 11-5 victory over the Mets and into a first-place tie with the idle St. Louis Cardinals in the frantic National League East title chase. At least that's what offensive guard Tom Rafferty thinks about the ; mud, rain, and fumbles of last week's loss to Navy. As the Lions move , down the field, several drives were st aped by fumbles. Asked what goes through his mind after the offense has lost the ball, he replied, "You can't let it get you down. We know we s could move the ball. All we could do is wait for tne defente* to get the ball back." Tom didn't feel the weather was as big of a factor as some people thought it was. "The weather didn't really bother me. We had a lousy preseason and I got used to it. Sometimes you have to watch your concentration but it really doesn't make that much difference." Writer The winner of tonight's Penn State-Hartwick soccer encounter (7 p.m., Jeffrey Field) will most likely tale over as the top team in Eastern soccer, courtesy of fifth ranked Penn's scoreless tie against LaSalle earlier this week. Currently Hartwick is ninth in the national soccer poll, while Walt Bahr's booters are resting in the seventh spot. The winner will probably inherit Penn's fifth position. The Hartwick team should be followed by a delegation of between 500-1000 fans. This, along with the Penn State turnout should push the at tendance figure above 5000 tig the contest. Capacity at Mfrey Field is 3500, but there is plenty of standing room. Richie Reice, ong of two frosh in the Penn State starting lineup, was asked about the pres Sure of being relatively new and playing in such a big game. doesn't think there is any added pressure on the offense due to last week's loss. "The line played good last week. We were doing our job." Commenting on the lack of scoring, he added, "Sure it's a lot of fun scoring 20 or 30 points but the im portant part is winning." Continuing on the theme of winning, Rafferty said he feels the loss to Navy will be a valuable lesson tqlhe rest of the team. He thinks that everyone will try a little harder, especially when they re member "how bad it is to lose." With Penn State at lowa tomorrow, the offensive line faces the third-different defense of the season. Asked -if the change in defenses makes it more dif ficult to play the line,- he thought that it doesn't make any difference what the defense is. "When you come out of the huddle, you have an idea what the play would look "I think there was more pressure on us (Reice and rommate-frosh starter Matt Bahr) in the first two games," he said. "But I am nervous about Hartwick because I heard they're tough to score on." Reice also said the 'large crowd should be a plus for Penn State. - "East Strouds burg and West Virginia were psyched when they came here to play us but they had no one to motivate them. Our fans give us lots of incentive." "When you - make some good passes during a play and the crowd cheers you' don't notice," he said. "But when the play is over and the crowd cheers, even if a goal isn't scored, you hear. It makes you try harder next time." Reice has been motivated enough in the first two games to score three goal's and an assist Although Reice said Hartwiek would be hard to score on, coach Bahr wasn't so pessimistit. "With the number of shots we get off during a game I It's interesting to note that last year lowa yielded a colossal 401 points. Wait, the rudeness gets worse. In its first two games, the lowa defense allowed 86 points to be rolled up. Contrast that to but 34 this year and alread;one see's the improvemeht Commings is talking about. "I think we'll be respectable," Commings said. "Our secondary ould be super ... we must develop some solid reserve strfngth in the line." Comming is a former lowa player himself. In fact he was the smallest lineman in the Big Ten at 173 pounds. He was a junior guard on the Rose Bowl...championship squad of 1956 that includ i d the lovable Alex Karras. . People nil Kinnick Stadium could see something strange tomorrow. "We're going to do something new at our games," Corn mings forecasted. "I'm going to have a card coach and in a critical situation he will hold up three different cards run, pass or punt.— and we'll go with the one that gets the most applause." But what if no one claps? 4 t.. Amt. like. You practice all week against their defense so you should know what you are supposed to do." Is there any difference in blocking for John Cappelletti and this season's backs? "Last year Cappy would find the hole or make one of his own. With Tom Donchez, all you have to do is give him a small crack and he will force his way through. Some of the other backs aren't as good at reading blocks but they'll learn with experience." Rafferty wasn't sure what the dif ference was in this year's varied offense as compared to last year's I-formation since he moved from tackle to guard during the spring drills. "The coaches thought it would be better for me because I would get to use my quickness and speed more. Besides, I'm kind of small for a tackle. (232 lbs.)
