—The Daily Collegian Tuesday, February 26. 1974 Ohio, Rutgers are cagers' final foes By RICK STARR Assistant Sports Editor All-America hopeful Walter Luckett, who’s getting a pretty good hard sell effort from the. Ohio Athletic Department, will be in Rec Hall tonight along with the Ohio cagers for an 8 p.m. battle with Penn State. And once past Ohio, the Lions will have to worry about NIT possibility Rutgers, which will pull into town Saturday for fenn States final game, another 8 p.m. contest. Neither team is out of Penn State’s class, either above or below, so the contests should make for an interesting end to a. strange season. Lion coach John Bach’s most immediate problem is Ohio U., a dangerous, but unpre dictable, club. JOHN BACH Unfortunatelyhe's not coaching 'John Bachs' Kditor's note: Following is the last of a three-part series on Penn State basketball coach John Bach and his program. “I’m sure mental attitude has a great bearing on some people. But I’ve always been altruistic enough to believe the will to win would transcend all other feelings. “I’m sure there are strains and stresses upon all individuals at certain times, but I’ve always felt that .these could be overcome. Persons have buried their loved ones during the day, and played and played well that night... “I’m just surprised that everyone'doesn’t feel this way. And I don’t think I’m unusual in this.” There are those who might argue that John Bach is unusual in his beliefs, that a coach has to realize that not all his players will react as he wishes them to react. “This basketball means more to Coach Bach than to all the players combined," says center Randy Meister. “He really takes a loss hard. You can see it in his face. The program doesn’t mean more to anyone than to him.” Early this month, the team was mired in a four-game streak of give-away losses and there’s no doubt that morale was anything but high on the Penn State basketball team. Several players wished Penn State might come out of its man-to-man defense a little more often, particularly when the team was in foul trouble. And some were as tired of Penn State's deliberate offense as were most of the fans. “I don’t think it’s enough to say you want to run,” Bach says, in answer to some of his players who had become oc casional critics. “You have to have someone who wants to run, who will show it in practice. You have to have players who will run their balls off going up and down the court in practice, up and down... That’s what it takes to run.” After their disastrous four-game stretch dropped the Lions out of tournament contention and their record to 12-10, they did get a chance to run. Against West Virginia, they ran. and won big. "Everyone went out and had fun,” said guard Kevin Burke after that 83-63 win. “No one likes losing and when we were, things sometimes got a little tense on the team. “Everything’s a lot easier when you're winning.” Indeed. And, of course, it may be that the .team was losing because it wasn’t emotionally “right.” “It seems like the same things happened last year,’’.Meister says. "We just don’t take every game seriously. On top of the list is Luckett a coverboy for Sports Illustrated before he even took a shot at Ohio’s Convocation Center. That was due to Luckett’s high school successes, which include a 31.4 career average. That isn’t his senior year average, that’s his four-year high school average. His first year at Ohio wr« considerably less than spectacular, but this year he’s starting to smoke again-. Some of his better nights this season were 31 vs. Northwestern; 27 at Utah; 21 at UCLA; 23 vs. Ohio State; 28 vs. Loyola of Chicago; 28 vs. Toledo and 25 at Cin cinnati. A • the easy games, the guys aren't psyched up... Emotion has perked up recently. A rejuvenated Ronnie Brown has been playing with “new enthusiasm and he’s looking forward t 6 a pro career," says Meister. Brown earlier had the misfortunes of death in the family and a fire burning down his house. But now his attitude is up and has rubbed off. The Lions seem to be enjoying basketball like never before. It’s difficult not to ponder the success Penn State might have had in basketball this season had it carried the attitude all along. To a man, the players believe they have more talent than their 14-10 record might indicate. Something always was missing. And even the win over WVU and the 66-64 upset of seventh-ranked Pitt can’t erase the disappointment. “Definitely we’re better than 14-10,” Brown said after the Pitt win. “This can’t really make up.for the disastrous season we had. We’re on the winning side but we could have played better,” p art of what was missing, feels Bach, was dedication. Complete dedication. “we need to get over the hurdle from being a good team to being a great team,” Bach says. “A few players now work all summer at basketball, but it might be that everyone will have to give up their summers, who aren’t willing to.” Anything less than total dedication seems inconsistent with wanting to play college basketball, Bach seems to feel. In that context, he frowns upon some of his players’ playing another varsity sport at Penn State. Burke also plays baseball and Dave Angstadt runs track; last year Ed Chubb also ran track. “We’ve never discouraged players from playing other sports, though at other schools this policy may not exist,” FOR SALE SUPERSCOPE amplifier 1015 watts per channel cer mag, tapemonitor, loudness, and tuner adaptors 9 month old 3 yr guarantee Ex cellent conditions! In any case, this year he’s playing much better, and he’s getting more than a sup porting performance from his teammates. Like Saturday when Ohio moved into a tie for its Mid-American conference with a 79-78, overtime victory over Central Michigan. Luckett put in 18 points, but his mate, 6-6 forward George Green, added 24. Right now Ohio is 14-10 overall, 8-3 in its conference. During tonight’s game, look for Ohio to move the ball down the court fast. Also, lacking a true center, Ohio plays with three forwards, all of whom can hit consistently from 15 feet or closer. A final note on Luckett, something that UCLA coach John Wooden said after the sophomore scored 21 points at Pauley Panillion just before Christmas. “He’s a great shooter,” Wooden said. “He has a great off-balance.type shot...he got three of four with our man on him just as good as he could be.”. Rutgers also should be a good one, even though it lost to LaSalle 82-76 Saturday. And consider that even though Rutgers now has lost three of its last four games, its record stands at 16-7. Phil Sellers and Mike Dabney made a worthy effort against Rutgers. Sellers came up with 28 points while Dabney’s 22 was next best. Bach says. “But I know it has to cost in terms of dedication to basketball." The comparison to Penn State football coach Joe Paterno— at least to Paterno’s rhetoric—is interesteing here. Paterno’s' stated philosophy has always been that “football is fun,” or should be, that if Penn State loses a game, life goes on. For Bach, who has lost 10 games this year, it's not quite that way. It may be stretching the point to say that Bach cares only of winning, but most certainly he is strongly goal-oriented. “He’s pretty military-oriented.” Meister says. “That’s the way things have always been and the way they always wHsbe. “It’s very rare that a player can respond only to his ‘will to win.' Thai’s probably the way it should be, I suppose, but I don’t know if it is. He really dpes set high standards, flhugh." The younger players, papicularly, appear to be tHfjmes most upset by Bact& tactics—his berating the team im the press, working it hqro on days before games which normally are considered slack days, his lack of “warmth” with many. The older ones, like Brown, Meister, Jon Marshall, seem less so. For some of his failings, if they can be called that, with his team, Bach is an asset to Penn State’s basketball program. His dedication, as well as his image, make him that. "Coach Bach really makes a good impression when he recruits,” Meister says, echoing what many others have said. “He dresses well and speaks well. He makes a much better impression than most of the coaches.” Bach, too, is one of the most articulate people to wear a Penn State coaching shirt in the past few years. Though he had been unfairly treated by the'press over incidents in volving disputes with players in past years, Bach generally has treated it fairly. It is easy’l I o argue that he is not a great basketball coach in the sense tha/a John Wooden or a Digger Phelps, for instance, may be considered a great coach. But it is difficult to argue that he is a poor one. He still, of course, needs to realize that he does not have a team of John Bachs—no coach does. And he also must reconcile himtelf with the notion that Penn State is unlikely to go really “big time” in basketball. If he cannot accept those conditions, perhaps Bach would be better off heading someone else’s basketball program. But Penn State would not be. THE CUT’S THE THING.
