First job is the CYO Meet at Maryland's Cole Fieldhouse tonight at 7 p.m. Then it's on the road again for a trip to Long Island, N.Y. for the Knights of Columbus Meet at Nassau Coliseum tomorrow night. The CYO Meet at Maryland shapes up as a challenge for coach Harry Groves' men, but it's all in the family. You don't want to show each other up or beat each other real badly." Penn State is going for the gold in the CYO Meet, even though it's only taking 13 men. "The last three years we've won siver and bronze, but this year we're giong for the gold," Perlman maintains. The Lions will place Gary Gittings in the two-mile, Fred Singleton in the hurdles and Doug Finkel in the 60-yard dash. Juniors Steve Groom and Mike Sands as well as Singleton and Perlman are natives or have high school roots in the New York area, and Groves is giving his men a chance to run in front of their old fans and friends. In the New York meet, Penn State will only use Maguire in the Invitational two-mile, Singleton in the hurdles and a mile relay team. Both the Cole Fieldhouse and Nassau Coliseum have 160-yard, wooden tracks (11 laps to a mile). Perlman said he is enjoying ,his senior year on the track squad for a variety of reasons. "Most of us enjoy going to practice now because it's more than just run and we're dying, Perlman said. "We talk about things now with coach Groves. We want to get more out of track than just running, we want to enjoy it, have some fun." "This should be an interesting year, and I'm not just waving my own flag." Joining Cappelletti, a consensus All-America at tailback, is wide receiver Gary Hayman, offensive tackle Phil LaPorta and offensive guard Mark Markovich. All-America linebacker Ed O'Neil is the lone Lion on defense. Markovich usually led the interference on Cappy's sweeps during the season and the timing of the duo could favor Cappy when he runs against South coach Don McCafferty's (Detroit Lions) defense.
