Women's referral service offers information, advice By COLLEEN BURRITT Collegian Staff Writer If you are a woman and are wondering where to find a competent woman doctor, need advice on where to go for abortion counseling or just need someone to talk to, call 355-0264. The Women's Information Referral Ser vice, which opened yesterday, provideg in formation on where to go and who to call for information on services available to women in the State College area. The service, sponsored by Women's Liberation, is set up at the home of four mem bers in Julian. There are no established hours, but Glorianne Leek, Women's Liberation mem ber, said it would be better to call in the evening because someone probably would be home then. According to Leck, the Idea for the service started when women new to the area came to a Women's Liberation meeting and said they wanted to know where to get day care, doctor and birth control information. Women's Liberation sent out question naires asking area women to name services which would interest them. Members then made up an information sheet, listing the phone numbers of requested services. Leek said the service will be two-fold. First, LLHSMOVIE TIMETABLE North - Johnny Got His Gun 7:30 & 9:30 Fri., Sat., & Sun. • 105 Forum 75 cents Pollock - Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid 7:30 & 10:00 ; Thurs - Sun PUB Rec Room 75 cents .South - 2001 Space Odyssey 7:00 & 9:30 Fri - Sun Redifer Room "D" $l.OO : West - The Last Picture Show 7:30 & 10:00 Thurs-Sun Warihg Lounge 75 cents • . . . . .. . ........... . . . . . . . . . . . 2 it will refer women to professionals for help. This includes gynecologists, female general practitioners and lawyers. Second, the service will adyise women on where to seek information about jobs, educational services and recreational ac tivities. Leck said the women will not try to do abor tion and birth control counseling themselves but will refer women to places such as the Family Planning Center for professional help. The service also will provide women with someone to talk to about their problems. Leek said women sometimes fight with their boyfriends, are on the verge of leaving their husbands or feel they are going to have a nervous breakdown. She said the natural urge is to grab the phone, just to talk to anyone who will listen. The referral service will handle what it terms "women in transition:" This includes women about to alter their living style by get ting married or divorced, or moving to a dif ferent location. Leck said the service i§ equipped to advise these women, not just refer them to other places. Leck said Women's Liberation eventually hopes to compile a complete list of referral numbers, which will be published in local newspapers.
