The Penn State Thespians is the oldest continuing student group operating under the same name. It was established in 1897 'to "present theatridal entertainment and to provide experience for the Pennsylvania State University students in all phases of dramatic production." Two faculty member's, the late Fred Lewis Pattee and John ,H. Leete are credited with founding and naming the organization. The organization has changed somewhat since 1897. Until 1918 the production casts were all male. Women were not allowed to be full fledged members until 1953. • Originally the Thespians produced "classics" but by 1910 a switch was made to musical comedies. Except for a brief time during World War I when farces were produced, the Thespians have continued to produce musical comedies. In early years the Thespians took their show on the road. Playing to near empty houses in small towns resulted in huge debts for them.
