Hurdler Fred Singleton, who will see action at the IC4As this weekend. Bruins swap BOSTON (AP) The Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League obtained goalie Gilles Gilbert in a trade with the Minnesota North Stars for center Fred Stanfield, the club announced yesterday. The club also announced that veteran goalie Eddie Johnston has been sent to the Toronto Maple Leafs to complete a trade last March that brought goalie Jacques Plante to the Bruins. Plante, shortly after the end of the NHL season, signed with the Quebec Nordiques of the World Hockey Association as coach and general manager. Gilbert, 24, appeared in 22 games last season and had a 3.05 goals against average. Stanfield had 20 goals and 58 assists for 78 points in 78 games last season. Penn State’s once-beaten 120-yard high hurdler broke 14 seconds two weeks ago at the Pitt Invitational Track Classic and came right back last week with his second best seasonal time in winning at the All-Pennsylvania Track Class and Open Invitational. However, the well-muscled 6-2,186-pound junior from Mt. Vernon, N.Y., disagrees. “I won at Georgetown the first week (of the season) in 14.4 seconds and won last week in 14.3,” Singleton remarked. “That’s not much of a dif ference.” Indeed, there has been little difference in his seven 120 high hurdle races this spring. Only twice has he surpassed 14.4 seconds, and in both events he won anyhow. The only race Singleton has lost all year was at the always tough Penn Relays, His 14.3 second timing was good enough to win last week, but amounted to only a fifth place in Philadelphia. Considering the caliber of the meet though, Singleton has nothing to be ashamed about there. Singleton earned All-Eastern honors last spring in the sprints after switching from the hurdles. He ran in the IC4A 100, the 440 and mile relays, and finished third in the 220. This spring, it was back to the hurdles for Singleton but he also runs the second leg of the Lions’ highly touted 440 relay team. He looked back over the season to date, as this weekend’s IC4A’s at New Brunswick, N.J. approach, and said the Pitt win was his most pleasing. “I broke 14 seconds (13.9) and this is like a four-minute mile to a hurdler.” In 1970, at Mt. Vernon high school, Singleton established a state record in the 120 highs with a timing of 13.8 seconds. He feels he can go all the way this weekend at the IC4A championships. “You have to feel that way,” he explained. Reviewing his past two Derformances, possibly his best this season, Singleton said these meets were a spring-board toward the IC4As. “These meets were to keep you sharp. You don’t actually hold back, but you’re not psyched up all the time.” At this time of the season, Singleton said the performances start getting consistently better. “Everyone is in the mood.” Looking ahead, Singleton, the younger brother of the Montreal Expos’ Ken Singleton, says his stiffest competition in the IC4A 120 highs should come from William and Mary’s Charles Dobson, the IC4A indoor 120 high hurdles champ, whom Singleton whipped at the Georgetown Relays, Andre Harris of Pitt and Penn’s Harold Swab. It’s conceivable that come Saturday night, Fred Singleton has cruised through the 120-yard event and left in his wake a series of untouched hurdles and a group of beaten opponents. xi IHE MRISCH CORPORAIION :$ gjBURT UNCASTER AUIN DELON PAUL SCOFIELD | :$ nA t, I 'ICHSR WINNER Film "SCORPIO” PG-S:-United Artists S: through Thursday at 2-4-6-8-10 Produced by PAUL GUCKLER and RICHARD IERNER D.rec'ed 3/PAUL GUCKLER Distributed"by CREMATION INDUSTRIES' GIVE US AN X TOGETHER AT LAST!
