—The Daily Collegian Wednesday, April 18, 1973 Energy choice uncertain From page 1 reactors, are precarious global experiments which may have dangerous results. "Indeed," "Science" asserts, "because of the consequences to human health and to the environment of any large release of radioactive substances, nuclear fission is potentially the most hazardous of all sources of energy." Another approach to the energy problem, especially critical for the next 15 years, will be energy conservation. James Spaulding, said in the Sierra Club "Bulletin," "In recent months, a solution advocated by the Sierra Club and other environmentalists has been gaining support: instead of mining and drilling for more fuel and designing more and more power plants, why not try cutting back on energy demand?" According to a Stanford Research Institute study the greatest energy uses in the nation are transportation (25 per cent of energy use) and space heating (19 per cent). The greatest area of potential energy conservation is in space heating. Excess ventilation and large window space make large buildings inefficient energy consumers. The World Trade Center in New York City consumes 80,000 kilowatts, more than the city of Schenectady, New York (population 100,000). Several large buildings already have been con structed to make effective use of lighting and body heat, which usually is blown away as waste heat. Individual homes could be insulated better to prevent energy loss. These im provements would not only be economical to the home owner but could save 42 per cent of the nation's space heating energy. Savings in transportation energy are more difficult because they involve im proved systems of mass transportation and a change in life styles. People enjoy the freedom and personal space of their own automobile. In San Francisco, for example, an attempt was made to limit traffic on the APARTMENTS & HOMES for Summer and/or Fall 1-Bedroom apartments for 1 or 2 people 2-Bedroom apartments for 2 or 3 people 3-Bedroom homes for 3 people Completely Furnished Very Reasonable Close to Campus WAGNER & GILLILAND 466-6215 237-1585 • All These Features Under One Roof Open " 24 Hours a Day Washer• Dryer Area Machines) Pinball Machines General Store Indoor Heated Swimming Pool • Basketball-Tennis Courts •Maintenance Man Living on Premises •Individual Thermostatic Control' for Heat and Air Conditioning •Ample Free Parking Almost Two Car Spaces for Each Apartment •Large, Bright Airy Rooms Laid out for Maximum Livability •Efficient, Modern Kitchen with Window •Wall-to-Wall Carpeting •Esthetically Landscaped into the Wood 4 Keeping All Possible Trees Immediate to the Buildings Directions: North on 322 (1 mi.), right on Suburban at Miller-McVeigh Ford. During rush hours automobiles with four or more passengers were per mitted to cross the bridge toll free. The project was a failure and discontinued. A recent staff report of 11 federal agencies concerning "The Potential for Energy Conservation" blames much of the wasted transportation energy on the "tastes, habits and aspirations of the American public," which include "an almost total disregard of any problems posed by the rate of energy consumption." The report continues, "Therefore, the trend toward more powerful, larger cars and more cars per family has been persistent. Moreover, 237-5709 •••••••••••••••••••• . -1- KITCHEN APPLIANCES• • • (10 BY • GENERAL ELECTRIC • • • •••••••••••••••••••• low-average car occupancy, use of cars for short trips and disregard for congestion problems have further aggravated other pollution and fuel-consumption problems." Another possible scheme of energy conservation would be to eliminate the rate struc tures that give incentives for high consumers. High-volume energy consumers usually receive large discounts on electricity prices so that in effect small users subsidize large users. The energy problem is complex. Ultimately, com promise by all sides may be necessary. it is impossible to halt entirely the need for more energy, but it also is impossible to continue wasteful and ineffective energy uses.
