Vets prepared for college life Sixty-five Pennsylvania veterans, all lacking the creden tials for college admission, arrived at the University last June. Three months later, after an intensive "get ready for college" course, 57 of the 62 men who completed the course are full-fledged college freshmen. And another veteran is enrolled in a specialized training school. Thanks to a program offered by Penn State, the veterans were given the opportunity to participate in the 11-week course, designed to correct their major academic deficien cies. Upon completion of the course, the veterans were con sidered for college admission under special selection criteria. They range from a 37-year-old Air Force veteran to a 19- year-old Army veteran. According to Charles R. Meck, assistant director for con tinuing education who coordinated the program, 55 of the veterans are enrolled for the Fall Term at various Com monwealth Campuses and at University Park. Three veterans are enrolled at other institutions, and four men who completed the course will not immediately continue their edication at the college level. Four of those completing the course, including three enrolled as college freshmen, had never attended classes beyond the eighth grade. "We have been more than pleased with the success of the program and hope to conduct similar programs in the future," Floyd B. Fischer, vice president for Continuing Education said. He pointed out that the program offered last summer em phasized written and oral communication, mathematics, reading and social studies. (AP) A three-judge ap peals panel yesterday reduced by 10 years the 63- year prison sentence given Arthur H. Bremer for the shooting of Alabama Gov. George C. Wallace arid three other persons at a political rally last May. Bremer displayed no emotion when the reduction was announced by Judge Roscoe H. Parker after almost an hour of deliberations by the three Prince Georges County Circuit Court judges. Parker said he and Judges William H. McCullough and James H. Taylor had con sidered the arguments heard yesterday morning, the presentence report on Bremer and the transcript of the Circuit Court trial before making a decision. But he gave no reasons why the judges decided on the 10- year reduction in sentence. "Sixty-three years is more than a life sentence," Bremer argued as he read the brief statement which he had written. "I submit that 63 years is such a sentence that it is not law but terror, the act of a repressive government, the very type of government our fighting men combat in Vietnam," he told the court. Samples of meat loaf served at the same meal proved to be free from contamination. The cheese, a blend of grated parmesan, romano and provolone, is shipped to dining halls in vacuum-sealed cans.
