—The Daily Collegian Monday, May 1, 1972 Machine: key to victory By ART TURFA Collegian Staff Writer The Undergraduate Student Government elections are over, and speculation abounds as to why Mike Shields toppled incumbent Benson Lichtig and bested four other candidates for the presidency. Although impossible to pick out one reason as being more important than the others, Shields' organization nearly 200 people News analysis tributed to Thursday night's outcome. According to Steve Arkans, president of the Academic Assembly and one of the key workers for Shields, "It's been the best organized campaign in Penn State's history." Arkans was one of the many campus organization leaders that Shields gathered for his backing. Other supporters included the presidents of the Organization of Town In dependent Students, In terfraternity Council, the Free University, many USG senators and USG Vice President Jim Fritz. Some viewed the larger than-usual turnout in Pollock- Nittany Halls as crucial to Shields' victory. There, he beat Benson Lichtig, the incumbent, by nearly 200 votes. Much of Shields' support was concentrated in this area. In East Halls, considered by Lichtig as an integral link in his drive for re-election, his margin over Shields was only 76. Others had second thoughts about Lichtig's purposely-delayed campaign onslaught. In the end, the race boiled down to a two-man race. The other candidates, Maiale, Zlotucha, Ed Burrows and Oz wound up pulling a much lower vote than they had anticipated. The voters might have realized the fact that Collegian notes 'ln absentia' graduates Students who plan to receive their degrees in absentia at the Spring Term commencement on June 24 or at subsequent com mencement exercises will have to file a Request to Graduate in Absentia Form with the Records Office, 112 Shields in advance of the commencement exercises.
