PAGE EIGHT Daily Collegian Hot Line A pickle by any other name..! How are sweet pickles made Paul Linz (llth-general arts and sciences- Meadville), Rich Adier (graduate-microbiology- Philadelphia), Gary Butler ( 9th-industrial engineering-Etters) The cucumber is the vegetable usually used in the manufacture of pickles. It is soaked in a brine, vinegar or other spicy solution, thus obtaining its distinctive flavor. Heinz’s Sweet Midget Gherkins are made in a mixture of distilled vinegar, sugar, dextrose, salt, alum, flavoring, tumeric coloring and polusorbate -80 (All that plus hours of eating pleasure for only 51 cents!) The exact combination of spices, however, is a closely guarded secret of each manufacturer. Who should I notify in case of a change of ad dress? Bob Van Dask (3rd-food services and housing administration-Pittsburgh). Collegian writer wins Hearst writing award Collegian Contributing Editor Steve Solomon won the third place bronze medallion Tuesday in the William Randoph Hearst Foundation national writing competition. Solomon. (9th-journalism-Lafayette Hills), was awarded a $7OO scholarship after he and seven other college reporters m terviewed, and wrote two articles on Janies E. Allen, Jr.» U.S. Commissioner of Education. . Solomon qualified for the final round of the competition, held in Washington, D.C., for his seven-part series of articles on military research at the University. The articles were published last fall in The Collegian. 4 He and the .first-place winner, Raul Ramirez of the University of Florida, are the only two writers to qualify twice for the final round in the ten-year history of the Hearst Foun dation competition. Last year Solomon qualified for the finals with a column on the politics and professionalism of the Olympic Games. The competitors’ articles on Allen were judged by Roger Tatarian, vice president and editor of United Press In ternational; George Bebee, senior managing editor of the Miami Herald; and Hubbard Heavy, executive editor of the Laguna Beach (Calif.) WDFM's facilities open for student discussions By STEPHANIE FOTI Collegian Staff Writer “Let there, be free and open discussion be tween students and the Administration'’ stu dent protesters and other sympathizers cry. According to Harold E. Nelson, faculty ad viser to WDFM Radio, the station’s facilities are open to those who wish to conduct free and open discussions on issues confronting the University. Last night WDFM broadcasted a discussion program in which four students talked about the recent demonstrations. Listeners were ask ed to call in and comment on the discussion or ask questions. The station is predominately run by students, and although the University holds the license. Nelson could not think of an instance where the University censored any programming. Rules on censorship come mostly from the FCC, he said. Equal Time to Views One FCC ruling resuires that the station give equal time to all views. Nelson said part of the station’s policy is to avoid making editorial stands on controversial subjects. “Instead, we gather different views first and present them at the same time.” he added. This is only part of the overall goal of the station, which in the words of Station Manager Paul Heimbach, is to “give service to the entire Shapp claims State budget will increase local taxes HARRISBURG (AP) subsidies and the Shafer pro- pledge to these teachers and Milton J. William Kunstlcr’s, defense at torney for the Chicago 7. speech could be heard live on WDFM. The station also featured a rebroadcast of the Montoya concert. Staff members Dave Talmus and A 1 Dunning said they were frustrated by the lack of funds to buy and repair equipment. Nelson indicated that the station could use more money, but WDFM was not the only organization on cam pus with money problems. For those students who volunteer their ser vices, the station provides .an extensive background in radio broadcasting. Many disc jockeys working for various commercial stations in the area started out with WDFM. Students pan the station without saying how they would improve it, WDFM officials said, adding that there was one student who didn t even know the station existed. . Production Director George Werl extended an invitation to all complainants to “come and tell us what you don’t like about it (the station).” Students need not be broadcasting majors to work for WDFM.
