Gymnastics coach Kathleen Corrigan will meet under graduate women interested in being on the gym team at 7 p.m. Monday in 106 White Hall. At 3 p.m. Tuesday golf coach Mary P. Ryan will meet golf team hopefuls in the White Hall gameroom. Both coaches have pointed out that previous exper ience is not necessary. According 'to Miss Corrigan, some of the top performerS on last year's gymnastics, team were beginners at the start of -the season. Last sea'son's team, she said, "ranged in caliber from girls who started last year to girls who went to national championships." And Miss -Ryan said any girl who shoots 18 holes in 120 or less should consider trying out for the golf team. Beinea par golfer is not a prerequisite. Novices are also invited Gym Team Workouts Workouts for the gymnastics team will be held from 7-8:30 Mondays and Wednesdays and 1-2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Women hoping to try out shOnld attend as many workouts as possible, Miss Corrigan said. Tryouts, consisting of presentation of a routine in any of - the events, will be held Nov. 6. Six meets are scheduled this season, beginning with a quadrangular meet Dec. 5 at the University of Pittsburgh with I Pitt, Penn State, West Chester and Slippery Rock. • Returning members of last year's team include co captains Colleen Vlachos and Linda Harkleroad, Carol Feldman, Betty Jo Spangler, Becky Yeagley, Sue Duvall and Joan York. Coaching for Spring Matches Although a new golf season doesn't open until next spring ,Miss Ryan said she hopes to provide c o aching dur ing fall and winter terms to give prospective team mem bers ,a chance to play. Golf, she noted, is a time-consuming sport. Miss Ryan said she usually carries six to selven women on the team, with four playing each match. Tryouts, though, won't be held until the beginning of spring term. The ; first matchf of the '6B season will be May 4 at Ohio State! If two girls qualify, they will be sent to the Women's Collegiate Golf Tournament at Duke University next spring, Miss ; Ryan said. Penn State will play host to the tourna ment in 1969. Last year's team had the Medalist at the Cornell Invi tational and came in second in that tournament; tied Cen tenary; beat Bucknell, Centre Hills Country Club and State College High School, and lost to Ohio State, WRA Program Under Way Now The Women's Recreation As sociation has• begun its WRA calendars in all women's resi dence halls. Virginia By DON McKEE Collegian Spaks Writer • Even though its opening game is eight days away, Penn -State's soccer team has been Working out for almost two weeks. Ken Hosterman's charg es have been drilling daily since September 18 with the aim of molding a Well-knit starting unit which is in prime condition. Hosterman regards condition ing as the main factor in mov ing the Lions from the dol drums of last year's 1-7-2 log to a winning season. No Line-Up So far a starting line-up has not emerged. "I've got to make up my mind soon," said Hosier man. "A soccer team becomes a team by playing together." Last Friday, the Lions hosted Lycoming for a practice game. State came out on top by a 2-0 margin with Barry Gibberman and Dave Stock .supplying the scores. The Lions were on attack consistently but were unable to show a; strong scoring 'punch. Several shots from outside went wide. One point on which Hoster man feels the Lions .need to improve is the change-over from offense to defense. The team is not yet quick enough for the coach's liking. Still Slow "We're still slow getting from offensive to defensive pat terns," said Hosterman. '"I want the-player 3 to understand that when you have the ball you're on offense, and when the opponents have the ball you're on defense-regardless of field position. State should get a real work out in its opener. The initial contest is on the road, at West Virginia, which is coming off a 13-2 season and figures to be People Read Small • Ads You're Reading One Now!, ~ DAILY COLLEGIAN CLASSIFIED AD DEADLINE 10:30 A.M.
