THE DAILY COLLEGIAN, UNIVERSITY PARK, PENNSYLVANIA Walker Sees Engineer's Failure As Liaison Between Professionals The professionalengineer has failed to take his place along with scientists, poli ticians and businessmen in making decisions about the nation’s future, President Eric A. Walker said. Speaking in Washington, D.C: before the Washington So ciety of Engineers Nov. 20, Walker suggested the engineer should be playing a real role as an interpreter or moderator bptween the scientists and the other groups. “The scientists knows little —and frequently cares less— about the social and economic problems that are associated with—-and often created by— the discoveries he makes. Rarely Know Science “On the other hand, the poli tician and businessman, the men who must face these prob lems and formulate plans and policies for future action, very rarely know what science can offer or how its offerings can be applied,” Walker said. The further fact that the en gineer also knows the limita tions inherent in the applica tion of science qualifies him to understand the problems faced by decision-makers. The President said that to a large extent the professional engineer has not been' recog nied as the man who should accept the responsibility for moderating between the groups. The lack of recognition of this, he said, is because of the engineer’s failure to take the initiative of leadership. '■M t&t S 'C/4 Walker said the work of the Engineers’ Joint Council, which he serves as president, is bene ficial in the improvement of the engineer’s image. The council’s most important achievement, he said, has been, the work it has done with the National Academy of Science toward the establishment of a National Academy of Engineer ing. “This, in my opinion,. will be a really significant ’step.” Walker said, “in ■' ’ sort of mechanism we so badly need for represtntaut..i u- j engineering community in mat ters related to technological problems and policies.” vv: ; VERB 98' Try the rest, Buy the HEW, ©{jesterfeli* needn't i l on the market today jr , SPECIAL OFFER i'SHAJVIpOO, 2M oz.
