Last year the Lions rolled up a 5-1 record in dual meet com netition, highlighted by a spine tingling 49-47 triumph over Army at Rec Hall. This lone defeat was a 51-45 decision to Syra cuse in a showdown battle for the EIGL title. Team captain Tom Seward, a standout all year for the Lions, captured the Eastern all-around championship in the EIGL tournament at Syracuse. But Seward is gone via gradu ation, along with Bud Williams, Gene Harlacher and Bill Schle gal. Part of Wettstone’s immedi ate task is to find replacements for these graduates. "He is the top per former around which the team will develop.” If there was any problem in the 1963 team, it was'in depth, something which the Lions should have plenty of this year because of a solid sophomore crop. Ed Isabelle, Bill Keller, Den nis Paoletti, Doug Collins and Gary Williams are several of the' promising sophomores who were outstanding as frosh and are fighting for front-line berths on the varisty this year. The combination of Jacobson. Isabelle and junior Jim Culhane give the Lions a top-notch trio of all-around performers. Accord ing to Wettstone, this depart ment holds the strength of the .Nittany Lion team. There is a possibility o f a major rule change for the East ern Intercollegiate Gymnastics League this year. Under the old scoring system, points were awarded for the order of finish in each event (6, 4,3, 2 and 1). The proposed changes would give a team the actual score awarded to a con testant by the judges of his routine (95, 89, 76, etc.). /< ■ » •> i f/v f :>/ 1964 VW'S $1722 Delivered in State College PRICE INCLUDES . •Windshield Washers a Leatherette interior • Safety Belts • Undercoating Storch Motor Company Authorized Volkswagen Dealer 1500 N. Next is Ray Saunders.) Penn State basketball coach John Egli has placed a big assignment in the lap of Tom Malinchak and he is confident the big man can handle the job., “I know I’m putting a lot of pressure on Malinchak,” Egli said. “But I feel he has reached the point where he can handle the assignment of k k k a starting college center.” Egli said that Malinchak won’t ever score a great deal but that he must be able to get the rebounds off the back boards if the Lions are to have a successful season The one problem Malinchak must overcome, though, is game fear. He is a virtual ter ror in scrimmage games, but seems to tighten up doing regular season games. Much of this, however, can be attributed to a lack of in experience. The 6-6, 210-pound senior never played high school ball at Monessen so he never received basic training until he reached college. Malinchak spent his fresh man year at St. Vincent’s in Latrobe before transferring to State. He came out for the squad and spent his sophomore year using up the year required of all transfer students before be coming eligible under NCAA rules. However, the year of “red shirting’’ gave Malinchak time to learn some of the funda ments of the game and State’s basic patterns. He started last season as a reserve, but by the time mid year came, Egli had him in the starting lineup. “Malinchak was needed in there to help us get the ball,” Egli said. “He’s the strongest boy on the squad and no one is going to push him around.” Two games Malinchak will probably never forget are the West Virginia contests. In the first one at Morgan town, Malinchak outplayed Mountaineer center Tom Low ry and helped spark State to a near upset. In the game at Rec Hall, though, Malinchak had trouble at the foul line and Lions lost by a point. , “You could see how inex NEW COLLEGE DINER . Tom will be more composed.” Malinchak averaged 5.5 points a game for the Lions but Egli feels he will increase the output this year. “I'm amazed at the differ ence in his play from last year to now,” Egli said. “He’s doing so many things better that he can’t help but score more.” The Lions will need the big man in the middle who can score once in a while to keep opponents from ganging up on the others. If Malinchak fills the bill and scores a little on the side State’s offense will be more effective. - BICYCLE - PARTS REPAIRS • ACCESSORIES Western Auto 112 S. FRAZIER ST. Only 177-pounder Mike Gill among the upper-weight classes appears to have a starting berth with the opener only nine days away for Penn State’s wrestling squad. Gill, a junior from State College, had only a so-so record last winter but came on at the end to pull one of the season’s big gest upsets. In the opening round of the ★ ★ ★ EIWA tournament at Annapolis, he upset Syracuse’s top-seeded Lew Roberts, Also in the running for a 177- pound berth is Matt Dunne. Returnee Ed Pohland may get the nod at 191 but coach Charlie Speidel is still undecided \ on this and the heavyweight j positions. j Speidel indicated he felt Poh-! land might do better at heavy weight where he can outma neuver many bigger men. Such was the case last winter when Pohland, returning to the lineup in mid-January, pinned Mary land’s heavy Frank Wikander to give State the 17-12 victory. "I think he might win a lot of bouts at heavyweight he might not win at 191,” Speidel said. “Up there with those big guys he can move faster arid outma neuver them. But of course he would have trouble with some one big, strong and fast.” Another contender for the berth at 191 is Ed Fleming, an other of the Lions’ many re turnees who saw limited action last winter.
