Campus Craze Sets Student Spinning

The intrepid "whirling dervish"
of the University said participa
tion in the sport is not as diffi
cult as it appears.
HE SAID HE padded the in
terior of the dryer with pillows
to cushion the jostles, jolts and
bumps that are occupational haz
ards for "spinners."
Friends assisted - Schultz by
holding the dryer door open
throughout his ordeal to prevent
suffocation and by periodically
inserting coins into the machine
slot to keep it running.
After forty-five minutes a
nauseated, but ecstatic victor

emerged from the dryer as the
unofficial national champion of
intercollegiate spinners.
SCHULTZ SAID, however, that
he would not attempt the feat
again, even if another student
erased his record. He said he pre
ferred to "rest on his laurels,"
ephemeral as they may be.
Some observers said they feared
the new "sport," which they
termed "frivolous," would en
croach upon the popularity of
more sedate, standard pastimes
such as telephone booth stuffing.

Distribution of student tickets
for the campus appearance of
soprano Phyllis Curtin this week
end will begin at 1:30 p.m. today
at the Hetzel Union desk,
The sale of general admission
tickets for $1.50 each for the Ar
tists Series-sponsored program
will begin tomorrow at 9 a.m. at
the HUB desk. They will be avail
able from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to
morrow and Friday along with
free student tickets.
MISS CURTIN, who will ap
pear at 8:30 p.m. Saturday in
Schwab under the sponsorship of
the Artists Series, has appeared
at both the Metropolitan Opera in
New York and at La Scala in
Milan, Italy, in •the past year.

well as for her stage appearances,

presented by the NBC-TV Opera.
She has also appeared on ABC in
a musical special and in Europe
has starred on her own program.
Miss Curtin will include selec
tions from various musical periods
in the program on Saturday.
