TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 12,.1963 Wrestlers Trounce VPI, 30-0 Penn State's only breather of the season is over and the wrestlers now face the task of meeting the top-ranked team of the East Syracuse. The Lions rolled over winless VPI, 30-0, at Blacksburg, Va., Saturday to record their fourth win of the 'season against two defeats. It was also the third straight win for coach Charlie Speidel's grapplers. In fact, the match was such a runaway that the Gobblers scored only seven bout points in the eight matches. This week, however, things won't be as easy. Syracuse is unbeaten and already owns impressive wins over Lehigh and Pittsburgh. Saturday's long, arduous trip to Virginia • provided the Lions with the easy match that Speidel expected•. In fact, it was the easy workout the Lions needed- after their two week break in the schedule. After Tom Balent won his 123- pound bout by forfeit State swept the next seven bouts -with five decisions and a pair of pins. 808 HANEY kept- his record unblemished at 130 pounds when he beat Carl Gellis, 10-1. Haney scored two takedowns, two pre dicaments, a reversal and time advantage in winning his fifth straight bout. Mark Piven, wrestling for the first time this year, looked good in scoring a 2-0 win over South ern Conference champion, Bob Robinson at 137 pounds. The Lion junior rode Robinson the entire second period and then escaped in the third period CAPTAIN George Edwards (6-0) • easily handled Don Eller man, 7-0, in their 147-pound bout. It was the second straight year that Edwards beat Ellerman. In the 157-pound bout, Chuck Beatty liroke a last period 2-2 tie with Bob Hatcher to win, 5-2. Beatty scored a reversal and add ed a point for time advantage. At 167, Marty Strayer scored a pin. for the Lions when he flattened Greg Streett in 2:28. At the time of the pin, Strayer held a 2-0 lead, scored on a takedown. Then, at 177 pounds, sopho more Mike Gill recorded another pin at 3:34 over Wes Foster. Gill was leading the Gobbler, 2-0, at the time and was in the top posi tion. THE TWO PINS scored by the Lions doubled their previous out put for the year. Ed Pohland had the only other pin of the season when he clamped his opponent in the Maryland bout. Pohland decisioned his VPI, op ponent, 7-4, in their heavyweight bout. 123—Balent.
