At his first New York concert, given in 1929, Ricci played the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with the Manhattan Symphony Orches tra. The late Olin Downes of The New York Times wrote of this performance, "He is a born virtu oso and more, a true' `wunderkind.' All that the great violinists do, he did." Ricci has been welcomed by many foreign governments, in cluding Russia. The Russian gov ernment gave him an official in vitation to give 12 concerts under its auspices in five leading cities in 1961. HIS DEBUT in Moscow won a standing ovation from the audi ence which obliged him to play nine encores. "Ruggiero Ricci would probably still be playing, in fact," a wire nevs service re ported, "if a string on his violin hadn't snapped!" Ricci will not play this concert without accompaniment, as he has usually done. Leon P.ommers- will join him, playing the piano.
