TUESDAY, JANUARY 15, 1963 Riflemen To Cadet As the car sped along the New York highway, its five occu pants sat just staring out the window. All that could be heard were the shrill sounds of a Chubby Checker record. It's a long seven-and-a-half-hour drive from West Point to State College, but it seemed longer than that. It always does after a defeat. The Penn State rifle team had just departed from West Point! after winding up on the short end of a 1444-1424 score. Despite the team's first loss of the season, coach Sgt. Joe Watson was pleased with the overall shooting of the team He pointed out that the aver age of the top five shooters was 285, about two points higher than in their previous two matches. In addition only two of the ten shooters failed to break 280. Watson said that "with the limited practice and only two meets that the boys have had, I was very pleased with the show ing. It shouldn't be long before our score hits 1430." In his pre-meet prediction, the Lion coach figured that State stood a good chance of upsetting the Black Knights, if the Cadets didn't have a good day. As is indicated by the score, they did have one of those good days. Included in the 1444 was a 295 and two-290's. The 295, shot by Bill Bradburn, tied an Academy record, while team captain Lou Sturbois and Al Chapman each contributed to the impressive victory with a 290. Rounding out the Cadets' top five scorers were Mike Wikan, 286, and John Ward, 283. • Leading the Lions in their losing attempt - were Neil 'Anderson, with a score of 286, Warren Grossman and captain Rich Gogolkiewicz, with 285's, and Den Brumback and Walt Morrow, each. with scores of 284. Army coach Sgt. Oscar Gallman called the victory "a good one to win." The Cadet mentor said that he was quite - concerned about the meet, having lost the services of one of his top shooters, John Hanningan.
