Chess Team Defeab Army 6-2
In Opening Competition of Season
The chess team, in competition
for the first time this term, beat
the cadets of Army by a "score of
6-2 Sunday at West Point.
The University squad, coached
by_J)onald-Byrne, continued to
dominate the cadets, having de
feated them by a' score of 7-1 last
year.
Members of the University 'team
who won on Sunday include:
Richard Abrams (sth-liberal arts-

tion-Scarsdale, N.Y.)- who con
quered their opponents in only
14 moves.

week’s “Can You Guess When
they’ll Score?" football contest.
The contest, sponsored by the
Retail Division of the State Col
lege Chamber of Commerce, fea
tures an all-expense paid trip- to
the Penn State-Pitt game at Pitt
Stadium Oh Nov. 24 as the prize.
• The final contest will be based
on Saturday’s Penn State-Holy
Cross game. Entries may be sub
mitted up to game time.

Jazz Club To Present Trio

■Lambert. Hendricks and Bavan
Trio in a Jazz Club-sponsored
concert.
Originally known as Lambert,
Hendricks and Ross, the trio or
ganized f ive ( years ago when Lam
bert. and Hendricks first recorded
for Decca Records. Three years
ago they teamed with! Annie Ross
to cut their first album, “Sing
a Song of Basie,” and went on to
perform as a trio in night plub
and jazz concerts.
. They have been featured at the
Blue'Note in Chicago, “The Hun
gry i” in San Francisco, The
Crescendo In Los Angeles and
The Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas.
THE TRIO has been featured
in both Time and Playboy maga
zines. After b single concert ap
pearance at London's Royal Fes
tival Hall, the press notices read
“Their Impact Will Live On."

In the spring of 1962. when the
trio was touring Europe. Miss
Ross decided to remain in Eng
land to renew her stage career.
Her replacement was Yolande
Bavan, from Ceylon who at the
time was working on stage in
England as a singer aiid actress.
Since then she has appeared with
the group at college concerts and
nightclub engagements. -

Featured artist will be Giml Beni, .bass baritone,
who has appeared this past year at the White House.
Appearing with Mr. Beni will be Olivia Bonnelli,
lyric soprano, who was recently acclaimed by, Paul
Hume of the Washington Post for her
performance in “La Traviata” at the Carter Barron
Amphitheater in Washington, D.C.
Both Mr. Beni and Miss Bonnelli are members of the
Metropolitan Opera Guild.
The artists will be accompanied by Stuart Rosa,
concert pianist, who has toured with Rosa Ponselle and.
