Todates article features the Wyomissing campus]; A long-established apprentice training program in Wyomissing, near Reading, was revamped re cently, when the local industrial schOol joined the University's sys teml of Ciirunonwealth campuses. Four ypars ago the industrial school, known as the Polytechnic Instituted switched its program from two and three-fourths yeais of work-study -apOrenticeship to the pniverSity's two-year associate degree, program. The Polytechnic Institute itself dates hick to 1933 when it re ceived a! charter, but the begin ning of ;the institute • goes back still another seven years. • IN 1927, a work study appren ticeship ;program was organized as part of: the department of edu cation in the local Textile Machine "Works. ! The training program changed; and developed as the needs og the local textile industry changed i through the years. About 45 of the 180 students are still enrolled in a cooperative stu dent apprenticeship program in drafting and design technology which survived from the former institute days. THE REMAINDER of the stu dents are enrolled in the Uni versity's associate degree program In drafting and design technology or, in the electrical and electronics technology curriculum. The Most recent addition is the 1 Thun house, which was the gift of f the MaChine Textile Works. The' large hous'e was the former resi dence 'ckf the Ferdinand Thun family (and is now a center for conferences and student recrea tion. „ THE; HOUSE is also used by personoel connected with the University's 30-year. old continu ing education program in the Wyomissing area. The major campus building with 10 classrooms, is a remodeled churc. It also contains adminis trativ and faculty offices, a library ,and a student social lounge. The, laboratory building, a newer structure, is owned by the Berkshire Mills Textile Plant and is. attached to the plant. It is a one-story building and has two large 'drafting rooms, four labor atorie and a student assembly THE CAMPUS is planning , to expand its enrollment from the present 200 students to 500 by 1970, 1 according to Harold W. Perkins, director of the campus. The possii-ility of adding the first two years of the baccalaureate de gree program to the curriculum of the campus has also been dis cussed, Perkins said.
