PAGE EIGHTEEN X-Country By Taking By JOE GRATA State's cross-country squad was introduced yesterday to its new proctor and .vice-versa as coach John Lucas 'made his debut at the harriers' first for- Mal workout. 'The former Boston University -track standout, recently named to succeed now executive director of the- U.S. Track and Field Feder ation Charles (Chic) Werner, made his appearance in a rather unique way as far as the harriers were concerned. During practice 'the 35-year-old Lucas worked out alongside the Coach John Lucas today re quested any cross-country can &Oh*, Including freshmen, to trntlll with him this week at his cities—Roam 301, Rec Ball. 'Tint .the candidate :himself should consider the chances," Lucas pointed out. 'But there's a position waiting for any 4 , 0 y With. sincere deldre." Lions—something the harriers were not accustomed to with Wer ner. But several other things were apparently different than last year too. One was a training schedule proposed by Lucas to prepare the team for an Oct. 6 opener with Pill. The agenda calls for "conditioning workouts" this week with a stepped-up five part training program to follows According to captain-e le c t Howie Deardorff, the other major change has been an obvious in crease in ( spirit and desire. "Everything naturally seemed a little different since Werner left," Deardorff said, "but the coach's philosophy and training procedures - have left little to be desired."
