PAGE SIX Schwab Called Most Improved By JIM KARL Everybody seems to have a different explanation for what caused the change in Jim Schwab this year. But - change there was, and everyone from Rip Engle to end coach J. T. White to Schwab’s teammates realize that the big end’s sudden emergence as a star on the Ripper’s first unit has been an invaluable lift to the team. "I hate to think of what would have happened if Schwab hadn't come through " Engle said yes terday. "When Robbie (Dave Robinson) got hurt in the first game it was up to Schwab. He hasn’t let us down." Schwab moved up to the first team when Robinson suffered a shoulder separation against Navy and he’s played outstanding ball at that position ever since. Robin son, rated as one of the top 6nds in the East returned to action in the Maryland game three weeks ago, but he hasn’t been able to move Schwab off the first unit. However, things weren’t always quite so rosy. Previous to this year Schwab had been labeled as one of the team’s clowns —a play- Two Penn Staten, halfback Roger Kochman and center Bill Saul, were named this week to the Eastern College Athletic Conference All East team. er with all the physical skill but hindered by his own carefree at titude. "He got off on the wrong foot from the very beginning," said Hank Oppermann, captain and end on last year's Lion squad and Schwab's roommate this year. ‘‘Jim is such an easy-going guy that sometimes he gives the im pression that he doesn’t care,” the assistant Lion coach said. "But this summer I noticed a difference in his altitude. He told me that he knew this would be his last chance and he really wanted to play ball. I told the coaches what he said but they didn’t pay much attention, and you can’t really blame them. ‘They knew all along that Schwab had the equipment but until this year he didn’t have that burning desire to make good. He has it now. "Two weeks ago Schwab broke his finger. He was afraid of being taken out of the lineup so he didn't tell anyone end Saturday he caught four passes. He would have caught another Caen Bowling The Ree Hall bowling lanes will be open to all keglers for the rest of the week, according to 11. J. Love. Rec Hall bowling manager. He wants to stay in there.” Lion end coach J. T. White tells of another factor that slowed Schwab’s development into a star. “Schwab’s been hurt by injuries: up until this year,” White said. “Two year's ago he came back ready to play some football for us but he injured his ankle on pic ture day and didn’t play a min ute all year. "Since he's been playing regu larly this year Schwab has gained confidence and right now I’d have to say that he’s our best receiver." “He’s been coming up with the clutch play—like those three catches he made in touchdown drives against Holy Cross.” Lion quarterback coach Joe Pa terno went a step further. “You just can't ask any more from an end,” Paterno said. “Schwab’s playing as well as any end could possibly play.” "I not only think that Schwab is the most improved player on the team, but I think he’s one of the most valuable,” Oppermann said. “Earlier this year we stalled a lot when we got down around the opponent’s 30-yard line. Now we’re coming up with the big plays and Schwab is making a lot of them.” Both Schwab and Oppermann agree that one of the main fac t tors in Schwab's rapid develop- FROM A NEW YORK RINK WOMEN'S - CHILDREN'S 2— $ 4— $ 6 rair 808 'N DICKS SPT.
