TUESDAY. NOVEMBER 21. 1961 Nittanies Bowl Chances Slim Despite Victory Bluebonnet Still Keeps Door Open (Continued from page one) a bid to Syracuse and the Gator Bowl has already announced that Maryland has accepted a con ditional bid, pending Saturday’s season finale with Virginia. The Bluebonnet Bowl, at Houston, Texas, hasn't closed the door on Stale yet, but the Lions are only one of a host of teams still being considered. Bill Whitmore, publicity direc tor for the bowl, said in a tele phone interview yesterday that off its performance the past two weeks State “has to be considered” for the “guest” berth. Whitmore said that at present his best guess for a host team is Arkansas. The Lions continued to prove that they have one of the finest offensive attacks in the nation Saturday. Time and time again Kochman and Torris barreled through gaping holes up front and when it was all over sta tistics showed that Torris had gained 144 yards and Kochman 133. Kochman scored State’s first three touchdowns, two in the first period and one in the second. Cru sader quarterback Pat McCarthy threw two 41-yard TD aerials to halfback A 1 Snyder to narrow the gap to 21-14 at the end of three quarters. But Torris ran over, through and around numerous Holy Cross defenders for State’s final two scores in the fourth quarter. After the game Lion coach Rip Engle praised Kochman, Torris Penn Stale-Holy Cross Statistics STATISTICS P.S. H.C. International Film Series Presents "BALLAD OF A SOLDIER" FOUR Showings this week ONLY Wed. 8 P.M. Thurs. 3,7, 9 P.M. When a film comes from Russia we think that it may be propaganda-laden rather than a work of art. BALLAD OF A SOLDIER, made in 1960, does have propaganda, but only in the best sense of the word: it is one of the most beautiful anti-war films ever made. This film has been called "The best Russian movie made since World War II a vehemently original, beautiful, patriotic, sentimental journey through war-churned Russia." This is a film which comes very close to melodrama and, as THE SATURDAY REVIEW commented, "It also brings back that old catch in the throat that movies used to achieve occasionally ..." The story: a young soldier, the girl he meets while on the way to battle, and the boy’s mother the reactions of the two women when the boy does not come back from the front. An utterly real tale of the inhumanity of death by the brutality called war. Tickets Available NOW 50c HUB Desk BEAT PITT RALLY 9:00 P.M.
