WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 15. 1961 W. Chester Booters Toughest Lion Foe With the regular soccer season just about over, West Chester once again has dominated play in eastern circles. The Rams have emerged as a national power in the last five years under the tutelage o the powerful eastern Pennsylv only 4 losses since taking the reins in 1957. West Chester hit their peak last year when Lorback led then) to a third place NCAA finish. Their only loss in 1960 was suf fered at the hands of the event ual champions, St. Louis, who knocked off West Chester in the semi-finals. This year West Chester (a 4-1 victor over Penn State) has coast ed to an 11-0 season, which has surprised many soccer followers. The Rams supposedly were weak ened through dropouts and trans fers of key personnel. Graduation losses were at a minimum, but three regulars were forced out of 6chool for academic shortcomings. However, Ram captain Bill Fulk and All-American centerforward Den Williams, have taken up the slack by carrying the brunt of the scoring. Oddly enough. West Chester began its climb to national prominence around ihe same time that Penn State started its downhill slide. The Lions won national titles in 1954 and 1955, but after these two banner years. State began to fall. The low point came in 1959 when the Lions won only two games. West Chester was the culprit that ended State's 19 game win ning streak in 1956. At the time the Lions were sporting the long est major streak in the country, but all this came to an end when the Rams held State to a score less tie at West Chester. The 1961 season' has not all been a bed of roses for Lorback’s booters. They have won many games by slim margins, and have Penn State - Pitt Tickets Tickets for the Penn State-Pitt game will go on sale today from 6 to 9 p.m. at the ticket window in Rec Hall. The Rams were forced into over time by the hustling Cadets, but once again proved their ability to win the big games in the clutch, as they dumped Army, 1-0. Pitt scored first on the Rams, but ihe final read 3-1 West Chester, as Fulk scored two goals and Williams one. Navy held West Chester to a scoreless tie until only 15 minutes remained in the game. The final score tead West Chester 5, Navy 0. The Rams have also downed such other big soccer schools as Temple and Duke. The mouthpiece will be different from the commercial type in that it will permit talking and it won’t hinder breathing. Each one will cost $l5, and will be used by the player for his three years of varsity football. But for incoming freshman football players the mouthpiece will be nothing new. Beginning next year, all high school players will be required to wear a mouthpiece of some type. Whether the mouthpiece will eventually solve part of the injury problem remains to be seen, but a look at statistics gathered by the NCAA committee on footbalLinjuries seems to indicate that it might. Commenting on injuriesi received to the face and head during the 1958 season the committie said: “A significant factor in the in juries is that a mouthpiece was not being worn in 93 per cent of the cases where there was a head injury of some kind. In contrast, face guards were worn 99 per cent of the time.” Regardless of the solution, one thing is certain—there will be a lot of research and further evaluation going on next year. And it appears that Penn State will be one of the leaders.
