TUESDAY. OCTOBER 31. 1961 Deardorff Sets Mark In Harrier Victory Howie Deardorff, Penn State's little "big man," led the Lion cross country team to its third win of - the year, 20-39 over Navy Saturday, and broke the Annapolis course record in the process. Deardorff, a 5-9, 145-pounder, traveled the five mile course in 25:32, erasing the old mark of * * * 25:37* set by Midshipman Bob Kunkle in 1959. "We've been waiting for Howie to break loose all year and after Saturday's performance he's going to be hard to beat," Lion coach Chick Werner said yester dDea. y- ardorff finished in a four way tie for first against Pitt. He finished third against Cornell and he tied for second in the Lion's loss to Michigan State. Steve Moorhead followed Dear dorff to the tape 18 seconds later. Navy's Joel Heine thwarted a Lion sweep of the first four places by finishing third in 2G:00 Lion Gerry Norman, still ham pered by a bad leg, finished fourth followed by an improving Mike Miller in fifth. Although Miller finished in a tie for first place against Pitt in the season opener his time against the Middies was his best of the year and he has .been improving in every outing. "I'm pleased at the way Mil ler is running and if appears that he is solving our problem for a fourth man," Werner said. Miller himself felt that the Navy meet was his best effort this year. "I had the right atti tude Saturday and it was a good race," Miller said. Deardorff was not the only record-breaker at Navy. Frosh sensation Cohn Grant ran his third race of the year and for the third time set a new record, Grant ran the 2.7 mile course in 15:32.5. Although this was the first time that the course had been run, Grant's time was also better than the old course mark. Dick Lampman followed Grant Boaters Lose to By CRAIG YERKES Penn State's soccermen suf fered their fifth poor first half in as many outings Saturday morning, and as a result Navy went home with a 3-1 decision. With the win Navy returned to its usual victorious ways and raised its seasonal log to 4-1 while State dropped below the .500 mark for the third time this season. The Lions are now - 2-3. both wins coming on the road. All three losses have been recorded here. Once again it was a slow start that wrecked the Lions' chances. For the fifth straight game coach Kenny Hosterman's boot ers were on the short end of the halftime score. Navy scored all three of its goals during the first half. The Lions would be sporting a sparkling 4-0-1 record if only sec ond half scoring was counted. In the first half of State's five games this year the Lions have been outscored 14-4. In second half ac tion Hosterman's forces have been nearly unbeatable, outscoring their opposition 8-3. Maryland and West Chester, two undefeated elevens, are the only teams that have scored second half goals against State. Saturday was certainly no trend breaker. The Lions lost their sixth of seven games played on the two-year-old field. Sophomore center-forward Karl] Kaeser provided the spark for Navy in the first half. Kaeser led the fired-up Middies by booting the contest's first two scores. His first goal was a bullet from around 25 yards that zipped past State's helpless goalie Dave Grubbs. Kaeser collected his twelfth goal of the season early in the second period, and Carmen Tortora scored Navy's final goal in that same stanza in the outstanding play of the game. Again Kaeser was in the mid dle of the scoring. He sent a By DAVE LEONARD 0.:,,... %.',,t:..w;z,t....,.:..j. Start Slow, Middies, 3-1 corner kick sailing close to the turf and Tortora came flying in to put a head on the ball about 10 yards in front of the Lions' net. Goalie Grubbs could do nothing but retrieve the ball for the referee. In the second half both teams fought the wind more than each other. Halfback Lou Paulin netted State's only goal by crashing a hard shot off the back of a Navy defender into the Middie nets.
