SATURDAY. OCTOBER 14. 1961 Soccermen Threaten Colgate's Win Streak By CRAIG YERKES Penn State's hungry hooters will test Colgate's 15 game win streak this afternoon at Hamil ton, N.Y. Colgate is 2-0 this year with wins over Clarkson and Hartwick, while State dropped its opener against West Chester last week 4-1. The Lions lead the series with Colgate 18-2. with Colgate's wins coming in the past two years. State is at full strength for today's encounter. Hosterman reports no major injuries now that Lion captain John Miller has recovered from an infected right leg. Joining Miller in the defense will be the same men who saw action against West Chester. Sophomore Mickey Mastil, who Hosterman says "played a good first game" against the Rams, will join Miller at fullback. Two veterans and two sopho mores round out the Lion de fense. Letterman Dave Grubbs will handle the Lion .nets and Jay Stormer will be at his cus tomary left halfback position. The remaining two halfback po sitions will be manned by sopho mores Dieter Heinze and Wentzel Pisch.. Hosterman has switched his front line personnel for today's game. Veteran left wing Howie Farrar has been switched to inside left where his big right foot will bolster the Lion's at tack. Moving into Farrar's spot will be Eddie Hinojosa, who saw action at right wing against West Chester. On the strength of a fine sec ond half against West Chester, U.S. Tennis Team Shoots For Upset ROME (iP) A second-string American tennis team shocked heavily favored Italy by taking a strong lead in the opening singles matches of the Davis Cup inter zone final yesterday. The Americans weren't expect ed to have much of a chance against the veteran Italians who beat the United States' best in the interzone final last year. Colgate has scored 11 goals in two games while holding the opposition to a single score. Hosterman calls the Red Raid ers "a perennial big team". "They are always big boys who play a rough brand of soccer and like to run a lot," Hosier man said. Today's game is a crucial one for both teams. The Lion's will try and prove that they are bet ter than their 4-1 loss against West Chester shows. The Red Raiders, 9-0 last season, would like to show that they were un justly left out of last year's NCAA regional playoffs. The favored Panthers will try to frustrate West Virginia's de sires and halt their own two-game losing streak. The Mountaineers haven't won two straight since they defeated Richmond an d George Washington in the early part of the 1959 season. Shortly after that, they started on the 18-game losing skid that they finally halted last week with a 28-0 triumph over Virginia Tech. The Mountaineers also would, like to gain revenge for the 42-0, shellacking handed them by Pitt, last year.
