FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 29. 1961 Werner Starts 29th Year At Helm of Track Team Not many coaches can say they have been at the same job for 28 years, but Lion Coach Charles "Chick" Werner is one of the few who can. Werner will begin his 29th season as track and cross country coach Oct. 7 when his harriers open the season against Pitt. The former Illinois track star had one of his most successful seasons last year. His teams in cross country, in door track, and outdoor track posted brilliant records and came through unmarked in dual com petition. The cross country squad copped an unbeaten 6-0 season, including a win over peren nial power Mich igan State, by winning the IC4A team title in New York. The indoor track squad was undefeated in three dual meets, and the track team compiled a 5-0 record. Corn hined this gives Werner's teams a Werner 14-0 record for all three sports, tremendous in anyone's book, Last year's IC4A title was not Werner's first. He won the East ern Championship two year's run ning in 1950 and 1951 and in 1947 and 1950 his harriers captured the NCAA cross country title. Werner was honored in 1959 when he was chosen as the coach for the American team which competed in And won the Pan- American games at Mexico City, Mexico. He was also chosen a coach for the American Olympic team in the 1952 games which were held in Helsinki. Werner has always been noted for his development of distance runners, but he has had outstand ing competitors in all phases of track. Best remembered for his per formances as a Penn State under grad was Horace Ashenfelter. Ashenfelter ran on Werner's 1947 NCAA championship cross coun try squad, but his big claim to fame was his victory for the Unit ed States in the 3000-meter steeplechase in the 1948 Olympics at London. Other big names who ha:•e de veloped under Werner's guidance include sprinters Barney Ewell and Bobby Brown and miler Ed Moran. Werner has cause to he proud of his past Penn State squads and this year seems to he shap ing up as another good one. Army Drops Lonely End NEW YORK (JP) Army Coach Dale Hall has placed the once revolutionary lonely end offense of the Cadets on the shelf, and once more Army's two flankmen are compatible young football warriors. The Cadet depth chart lists senior Paul Zmuida as its No. 1 lonely end; but the 6-foot-1, 180- pounder from Schuylkill Haven, Pa., contents himself with moving 15 yards from Army's outside tackle after leaving the huddle, "For one thing. the rules now state that 15 yards is the limit for splitting a man, so that rules out the lonely end as such," Hall said yesterday. "We feel that with this limitation it is better that the boys get the signal in the huddle." Along with their passing at tack the Hurricanes have a strong running game which tends to keep opposing defenses honest. According to backfield coach Frank Patrick, who scouted the Hurricanes in both their games this year, Miami has a strong, ag gressive line which will outweigh State by 8-10 pounds per man and two powerful backs in Jimmy Vol lenweider and Nick Ryder. State 'will start the same line up tonight that started against Navy with the exception of Dave Robinson, who dislocated his shoulder against the Middies and may be out for the season. Jim Schwab will start in place of Robinson and Cliff Davis will take Schwab's place on the Reddie Unit. "No one can really replace Rob inson," Engle said after learning that his star left end would be out for at least six to eight weeks. "But Schwab did a fine job against Navy and we hope he improves steadily on that showing." Engle indicated that Ralph Bak er has been moved from guard to end and may spell Davis on de fense tonight. UNIVERSITY PARK, PENNSYLVANIA Maris Ready For Red Sox; MantleAi I ing NEW YORK (/P) Roger Maris will be back in the line up but Mickey Mantle prob ably won't when the New York Yankees meet the Bos ton Red Sox tonight in the opener of the final series of the year. Maris is tired but in good health. Mantle is both tired and sick. The star centerfielder, plagued by a virus for over a week, suffered a relapse Wednesday and did not, even report to the park. He is expected to be in uniform tonight,' but even if he plays, he is almost certain to be pulled out after a, couple of innings. Maris is eager to renew his efforts to get home run No. 61, which would make him the I only player in history ever to hit more home runs in a season than Babe Ruth. He matched Ruth's 1927 season total by hit ting his 60th against Jack Fish er of Baltimore Tuesday night. The M and M boys were miss ing from the lineup when the Yan kees lost to the Orioles Wednes-i day. Yesterday was an off day for the Yankees. Whitey Ford, Manager Ralph Houk's candidate to pitch the opener of the World Series against Cincinnati next Wednes day, was slated to start tonight. Houk indicated he will yank his star lefthander after five in nings so he will be fresh for the opener. Fred Hutchinson, manager of the Reds, apparently had the same idea. He named southpaw Jim O'Toole, his probable World Series starter, to oppose the Pi rates in Pittsburgh tonight. It will come as no surprise if Hutch sends O'Toole to the showers aft er five or six innings.
