" ='■' ' "I _ —Collegian photo by John Reauge TIE-BREAKER —Don Jonas 25-yard field goal soars high over the cross bar to break a 10-10 tie against Navy in the final quarter Saturday. Frosh Short An abundance of backs and very few linemen were on hand yesterday as the Penn State freshmen ran through their first practice session for the coming season. Head coach Earl Bruce and assistant coach Dan Radoko vich will spend the next four weeks rounding the squad into shape for the opener with Navy Oct. 21. Of the 21 candidates on the squad with scholarships, only seven are linemen, and of these seven, three are ends. However, with almost a month to practice before the first game, Bruce will have ample time to make a few changes. Following the game against Navy, the Frosh will make their only home appearance of the sea son against Pitt Oct. 28. They will conclude their three-game sched ule against West Virginia at Mor gantown Nov. 4 Lion chances for a success- I ful season will depend a great j deal on 22 members of the j squad who came out on their | own. A few surprises along the way would be a real blessing to the coaching staff. j Leading the list of backfieldi candidates is George Brome, a! swift moving halfback from! Brooklyn, N.Y. Brome was al trpile-threat star in high school. 1 Three other New Yorkers , will be vieing for halfback spots on the team. They are Pete Ochsner from Syracuse, Dean Richardson from Perry, and i Dana Pickup from Wellsville. Fullback candidates include. Bud Yost from Castanea, Torn' Bleehash from Latrobe, and Bob' Kane from Munhall. '■ Bill Kmit, Gary Klingensmith, Dirk Nye, and Joe Vargo are also in the running for backfield posi tions. Two big 250-pounders. Noel Sabatino and John Simko will he counted on to anchor the line. Also bucking for a slot in the Lions Defeat Middies, 20-10- (Continued from page twelve) goal before, booted a 31-yarder to tie the score at 10-10. Navy began moving again after the ensuing kickoff but a diving interception by Huffman halted] the drive. State didn’t waste any time moving to the Navy 6, but a third down pass from Hall to Bob Mitinger fell incomplete and Jonas came through again, split ting the uprights from the 15. Near the end of the fourth quarter Caum replaced Hall, who was bothered by a sore ankle, and in three plays the Lions had another score. W>th the ball on the State 32, Caum threw a running pass to Wydman, who twisted his way, 46 yards to the Navy 22 before being caught from behind by Dick Merritt, a sophomore fullback who runs the 100 in under 10 seconds. Gursky carried for short yard age to the Navy 19 and then Caum skirted Navy’s right end, cut in side one defender and sprinted into the end zone. Jonas kicked the extra point with less than 2 minutes remaining and State had a hard-earned victory. Rangers Farm Three GUELPH, Ont. (AP) The New York Rangers of the National Hockey League farmed three play ers yesterday to the new Los Angeles Blades of the Western Hockey League. Footballers on Linemen line will be John Ibex, Gerry Councilman, and Ron Adams, a converted end. End candidates are Jim Bower, Tom Bedick, and Morris Bowes. Don Miller and Glenn Ressler are also expected to fight for an in terior line job. THE DAILY COLLEGIAN. STATE COLLEGE.
