The team last lost more grid games than they won In 1938, when the record was 3-4-1. Since jumping off on the Lions have recorded 136 triumphs, 53 defeats, and 8 ties. Included in that record was a 13-13 tie with Southern Methodist in the Cotton Bowl following a 9-1 campaign in 1947, a 7-0 victory over Alabama in the 1959 Liberty Bowl after an 8-2 campaign, and a 41-12 romp over Oregon in the 1960 Liberty Bowl after a 6-3 regular-season record. COACH RIP ENGLE, at the helm since 1950 owns a 68-31-4 record. He'll begin his 12th cam paign Sept 23 when the Lions open their 10-game card against Navy at Beaver Stadium. Despite a tough schedule which calls for home games against Navy, Army, Syracuse, California, and Holy Cross, and road tests at Miami, Boston University, Maryland, West Virginia, and Pittsburgh, Penn State apparent ly has the where-with-all to chalk up another winning record in 1961. FIFTEEN LETTERMEN are numbered among the candidates who'll report to Engle for fall drills. These include end Bob Mit inger, tackle Jim Smith guard Joe Blasenstein center Jay Huffman, quarterback Galen Hall, and half back Don Jonas from last season's ,so-called first unit. The lettermen who will return from the 1960 Reddy (second) team are end Dave Robinson, tackles Charlie Sieminski and Gerry Farkas, guard Bob Hart, center Bill Saul, halfback Al Gur. sky, and fullback Dave Hayes. JULY 27, 1961 r winning streak in 1939, the Mauch Predicts League Pennant For Dodgers Philadelphia Phillies man ager Gene Mauch feels that the Los Angeles Dodgers will win the National League Pen nant. Before the All-Star break, Mauch said that he expected the Dodgers to make a runaway of it after the first midsummer classic. THE CINCINNATI REDS still have a grip on first place and Mauch was asked to comment on 'his prediction Monday night when the cellar-dwelling Phillies (25 1 / 2 games out of first) played an ex hibition game with their Eastern League farm team, the Williams port Grays (Class A). "I had expected the Dodgers to be in first place by now," Mauch commented. He said that he was surprised that the Reds were still in first and thought that they would stay in the fight down to the wire, but that the Dodgers would fly the 1961 Pennant from the Colisium. He also said that Milwaukee and San Francisco would be in the thick of things. MAUCH SAID that the Phil lies were still going strong with their rebuilding program and they plan no wholesale trading over the winter. The Phillies were beaten 5-2 by the Williamsport team and would have been shut out but for a two run homer by Johnny Callison. Earlier this season the Phils lost a 4-1 decision to Bakersfield of the Class C California League.
