TUESDAY, MAY 9. 1961 Days of Waiting Over, Kmhman's Knee Holds Up By JIM KARL The day, of , waiting are over for Roger Kochman. Kochman knows now that the left knee that helped rocket him 100 yards against Syracuse two years ago will carry him back into the football wars - next fall. The Lion speedster was one of the standouts in the Blue- White game played before a sparse crowd in rain-drenched Beaver Stadium Saturday. But this time Kochman shone in a different role—defense.. He came up with countless key tack les despite his team's 18-12 loss to a Don Caum-directed White unit. In fact, a Kochman tackle led to the first score of the game with less than three minutes gone in the first quarter. Halfback Steve PClpp circled under a punt on his own six but didn't take more than a step before goehman separated him from the ball. Chris Weber picked up the fum ble on the three and fullback Bud die Torris went over for the first score of the game on the next play. Kochman was stopped cold on his smash off right tackle for two points. - The Whites tied it up later in the period when fullback Dave Hayes intercepted a Pete Liske pass and raced 32 yards down the sidelines for the score. Then the 170-pound Caum went into action, Shortly before •the half ended he teamed up with Popp on a 47-yard pass and run play and the Whites had a 12-6 lead. Then near the end of the third period Caurn hit left end for three yards and paydirt to give the Whites an 16-6 margin. Blue fullback Tien 11rbanik ended the scoring when he bulled 12 yards up the middle in the fourth quarter. After the game Kochman was happy over the way his knee held up. "I lost a few steps as far as speed goes but I'll get it back," he said. "In fact, I'm getting it back right now, but it's just like learn ing to run all over again." The Lion speedster injured his knee while playing sandlot baseball in Pittsburgh last year and had to sit out the 1950 sea son after a sensational sopho more campaign. The knee was slow in respond ing to treatment and there was some doubt about whether he would play football again. But spring drills have con-1 vinced Kochman the knee will; hold up. "I've been hit hard this' spring, probably as hard as I'll ever get hit, and the knee feelsi fine." he said. "Don't look for Kochman to be like he was against Syracuse two years ago for awhile yet." Rip Engle warned. "He just doesn't have all his speed back. "But it will come back, and in the meantime .we've been im pressed with his attitude and his willingness to learn," Engle said. .4-14-1-144.4444-14+++44 - 4:4;° - ;44+ ot.
