PAGE TWELVE Jazz Mass Planned By Lutherans One of the recent attempts to modernize church liturgy will be presented in a twen tieth century folk mass at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow in the Luth eran Student Center. 412 W. College Ave. This "jazz mass," as it has come to be known, was written several years ago by an Anglican clergy man, Geoffrey Beaumount from Camberwell, England. In Beaumont's arrangement of the mass, no organ is used, bUt rather a combo of piano, guitar, saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, bass viola, drums and trombone. The tempo of the music ranges from beguine dance rhythm, to waltz time, to a strong swinging four four beat. A cantor leads the service and the congregation partici pates, responding to the words of the cantor, and sometimes joining him in the singing of "hymns." "To many people the music of the church was foreign and not understood, Beaumont said. Until his "folk mass" was written about, ten years ago, he said, there had not been a new church music setting since Elizabethan times. He used the phrase "folk mass" because his music was the normal, everyday popular music of the majority of the people of the time. "What we know as 'church' music today—the plainsong, the chant—were the familiar types of music in the early days of the church," Rev. Arthur R. Seyda, Lutheran campus pastor said. "Luther used secular music to get the people singing," he said. Why So Glum, Chum?
