FRIDAY. MARCH 3. 1961 Meriwether Given Comm WASHINGTON (fP) By a sin gle vote, a Senate committee ap proved Charles M. Meriwether yesterday to be a director of the Export-Import Bank. Approval came after Meriwether, a segre gationist, denied membership in the Ku Klux Klan. It was the closest any nominee of President Kennedy has come to committee rejection, and it could foreshadow trouble in the full Senate. Chairman A. Willis Robertson, D-Va., said the nomi nation would not reach the floor before Monday. With six senators not voting, the Banking Committee ap proved Meriwether by a 5-4 vote. For 2Vfe hours, the Alabaman was questioned closely about his views on segregation, the Klan, anti-Semitism, and politics. Meriwether, state finance di rector, is a former campaign man ager of Gov.' John Patterson of Alabama. Patterson was one of the first Democratic governors to support Kennedy for the Demo cratic presidential nomination. Most of the controversy over Meriwether has been stirred by his past association with re tired Adm. John G. Crommelin. In recent years, Crommelin has run for a variety of offices in Alabama. Meriwether was Crom melin’s campaign manager when he ran for the Senate in 1950. But 220-A Allen St. Enjoy a REWARDING SUMMER PROGRAM at C.W.POST COLLEGEsai? OF LONG ISLAND UNIVERSITY - BROOKYILUE. Lister Hill, D-Ala., in 1950, had not made the extreme racist statements he said Crommelin has made in later campaigns. A hint that Meriwether's nom ination was headed for trouble emerged Wednesday at Ken nedy's news conference. Twice, the President was asked about Meriwether. In terse re plies, the President supported the nomination but did not elaborate. Asked if there was anything in Meriwether’s background that might embarrass the administra tion, Kennedy replied: "No, I have sent Mr. Meriwether’s name up there after reading the FBI report and records.” Then, in reply to a second ques tion, the President merely con firmed that Meriwether once had been Crommelin’s campaign man ager.
