It was Navy's fourth straight win and State's first loss after de cisions over Springfield and Tem ple. The Middies swept to their vic tory despite two firsts and a sec ond by Gregg Weiss, the Eastern all-around champion. "That was not only the best Navy team I’ve ever seen," said Penn State coach Gene Weli slone, "but It was also one of the poorest performances by a Penn State team. “We completed only two of 14 exercises and you just can't do that and win." Weiss won the event with a low 228. Navy ace Bruce Krueger fin ished second with 213 and team mate Joe Maiden recorded a 190 for third place. Weiss beat Krueger again on the high bar, 273-261. Midship men Jim Hutcheson and Gil Perry beat Seward out for third, ; but State was behind by only i six points (27-21) going into the I rope climb.
