PAGE SIX Cagers Stop Bullets, 76-58 Trueblood, Harris, DuMars Pace Win GETTYSBURG, Pa., Jan. 12—Either Gettysburg’s 8-2 record was a fluke, or Penn State has a mighty fine basket ball team. Playing their best game of the Bullets here tonight, 76-58, Tuesday’s 71-67 loss to Bucknell. The win raised State's season al mark to 7-5 and Set the stage lor Saturday's all-important meeting with Army at West Point. A tight defense and superior board strength made the differ ence tonight. The Bullets had trouble getting good shots and even when they did. nothing seemed to drop. They connected on only 31 per cent of their shofs compared to 43 per cent for Penn State. In rebounding, Gene Harris constantly swept both boards and set (he pattern for teammates Jake Truebtood and Earl Hoff man. Harris had 17 rebounds to lift his total to 55 in the last four games. Trueblood took scoring honors for Stale with 18, but Mark Du mars with 17 and Harris with 16 were right behind. The Lions dominated the game from the opening minutes and built up a 27-20 halftime lead. They got hot at the beginning of the second half and didn’t cool off until Coach John Egii cleared the bench with State ahead 68-45 and four minutes left. Cornell, with nine other meets scheduled after Penn State, has jQrimm Joins Cubs' Board of Coaches I CHICAGO (JP) Charlie jGrimm, a three-time manager of! the Chicago Cubs, and Verlon I Walker, a club employe since 11948, yesterday were named to the Cubs’ unique board of coaches. 1 They were the sixth and sev enth men appointed to a proposed eight-member coaching staff from which the 1961 Cub field manager apparently will emerge. Immedi ately, there was speculation that Grimm might be tapped for a fourth term as Cub field boss. Owner P. K. Wrigley said, at a complex news conference, that the eventual Cub leader (Wrigley disdains the term “manager”) will be determined in spring train ing. ! “One man will emerge as the deader,” said Wrigley, who added |he would not appoint any par ticular top man, asserting this ! would come about “automatical ly.” j Grimm, 62, also one of three Cub vice presidents, said he was not interested in becoming field i manager, "head coach,” or what-j ever title the 1961 Cub leader may carry. ! Of its 14 dual-meets, seven are with teams outside the Ivy League. Besides Lehigh, Pitt and Penn State, Cornell meets Colgate, Min nesota, lowa State and Mankato State. j Wrestling at the New York : school has been highly success | ful the last few years. The 1958 Cornell team had a 9-1 dual meet record, losing only ito Lehigh. The Big Red won the ■Eastern title at Pittsburgh that ■ year with 64 points. The 1959 squad which was third lin the Easterns had an 11-1 dual meet record, losing only to lowa State. Last year Cornell was 10-1, losing only to Penn Slate (22-8). However, they only placed fourth in the Easterns at Prince ton. Coach Jimmy Miller has 11 llettermen back from last year, including EIWA 157-pound cham pion A 1 Marion. Marion, who captains the Big Red squad, was 11-0 in dual meet competition last year. He lost in the third round of the NCAA tourney after pinning his first two opponents. Jared Barlow, a five-foot four inch junior, is Miller's starter at 123. Barlow was 3-8 last year and has a 2-1-1 log so far this season. Wilmot Carter will go for Cornell at 130. He was 3-4 last year. Dick Giustra, 2-1 this year, operates at 147. He was 5-4 in 1960. Sophomore Pete Cummings, 2-2 this year, usually wrestles at 157, but Miller may switch him and Marion if Ron Pifer goes at 157 for State. Allen Rose, Miller’s 177-pound er, was 6-1 last year but has yet to win in two outings this sea son. Phil Oberlander, 2-1 this year, had a 10-0-1 record last year and placed third in the Easterns. George Loveless will wrestle heavyweight for Cornell. He is 0-2 on the season, losing 13-3 to Pitt’s Bob Guzik in his last match. Four of Miller’s nine starters are products of Ithaca High School.
